Obituary

Albert Eng - Pullman, Wa - 76

Albert Eng was born on July 7, 1947 and left this world a better place on February 2, 2024 surrounded by his wife Ellen, and his son, Alex. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He is survived by his wife Ellen, son Alex (Tera) and three grandsons, Andrew, Anthony and Avery; brother Kenneth Eng; and brother Robert Eng.

Albert was the son of Tommy S. Eng and Ellen L. Eng, of Pullman, WA. He was born in San Francisco, California at the SF Chinese Hospital. Albert was the younger brother to Kenneth Eng, and the older brother to Robert Eng. He was preceded in death by father, Tommy Eng, and mother, Ellen L. Eng.

Albert smiled his way through the halls of the Pullman School District, attending Adams, Franklin and Edison elementary schools, graduating from Pullman High School in 1965.  Along the way, he brought his humor and stories to build friendships, while causing a little mischief.  He attended USC, and graduated with a degree in Finance. The big city lured him away, but it was the small town that brought him back.  After a short stint in the insurance business, Albert was headed for home.  He was ready for the allure of good food, great conversation and customers; full of zest, and even grumpy one's, too.  Together with Kenny, they ran the Oriental Restaurant.

The Oriental, made a lifetime of memories.  Soda crackers and butter, the Ming room, specials…Operated through three generations, from Grandfather Charlie to Tommy, then Kenny and Albert.

Albert took his big smile, a twinkle in his eyes, married Ellen in 1976 and had Alex shortly thereafter.

By 1988, he purchased the local McDonalds, which eventually blossomed into two. He was an owner/operator for thirty years, retiring in 2018. Albert was extremely proud of his former employees, going forth in the world and flourishing along the way to their life long career paths. He was especially proud to have Jill Freuden assist him as his manager and supervisor during his career at McDonalds.

Albert enjoyed his family, friends, a great meal, and the camaraderie of it all.  As you might well imagine, he loved trying new restaurants, bringing his family and friends together.

Albert never saw a community cause that he didn't support.  He always enjoyed sponsoring and supporting the next generation of students and young adults. From scholarships, to golf tournaments, he found joy in celebrating the success of his friends, employees, and community.

He adored his grandsons, always offering them words of encouragement and looking for excuses to take them out to a restaurant.  He had fond memories of Eng trips with his brothers from Las Vegas to Hawaii to China, always planned around an opportunity to eat.

He was a member of Whitman Lodge 49, Mason, Scottish Rite, El Katif Shrine, USC Alumni Association, McDonald's Asian Operators Association, Benefactor and Emeritus at WSU amongst others.

A special thank you to the incredible staff of Pullman Regional Hospital, Gritman Medical Center, Palouse Medical (Stephanie Fosback, Dennis Simpson, Nancy Gregory), Paradise Creek Health and Rehabilitation, Gentiva Hospice and Sherry Ankrah for their excellent and compassionate care.

A Celebration of Life will be held spring 2024 in Pullman, WA and Los Angeles, Ca.
