Albert J. Schauble, 81, a prominent Pullman attorney, passed away in Spokane on Friday, March 14, 2014 surrounded by family. Albert (Al) Schauble was born May 1, 1932 in Killdeer, North Dakota. He was one of nine children born to Robert and Mary Schauble. At age five, he and his family moved to St. John, Washington. Al graduated, Valedictorian, from St. John High School in 1950. He attended Gonzaga University before receiving his Juris Doctorate from the Gonzaga School of Law in 1958. Al married the love of his life, Betty Jean Kaufman, of Spokane on April 30, 1955. Shortly afterwards, he served a 16-month tour of duty in Korea as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Upon Al's completion of military service and graduation from law school, he and his young bride, Betty, and the family they had just began, moved to Pullman. Al joined the respected law firm of Hugh Aitken and Marshall Neill in Pullman, where he practiced law for the rest of his life. Al was former President of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce, past President of the Whitman County Bar Association, a fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel (ACTEC), and was widely acclaimed by a renowned national publication as one of the Best Lawyers in America® in Trust and Estate Law for 10 successive years. He was given, by the most acclaimed peer review committee, the highest professional and ethical rating (AV Preeminent®) that can be given to a lawyer. Above all else, Al was passionate about his large family. He especially loved following his children and grandchildren at ALL of their sporting events. He was revered by his clients and colleagues, and a recognized pillar of the Pullman community. He was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, having served on its inaugural parish council. Al and Betty travelled extensively throughout the U.S. and the world. He loved college sports, especially basketball, and followed Gonzaga and WSU athletics faithfully. Al never retired from his law practice, and he was proud to have been followed by his daughter, Linda, into the law practice of Aitken, Schauble, Patrick, Neill & Schauble. Al is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; five children and their spouses, Al Jr. and Cheryl (Byers) Schauble, Steve and Lynne Schauble, Linda Schauble, Karen and Steve Leaffer, and Rob and Gail Schauble; ten grandchildren, Joe, Kyle, Maria, Ryan, Rob, Kirstin, Lindsey, Jacob, Joshua, and Katherine; his sister Liz DeLong, and his five brothers, Milton, Bill, Phil, Rollin and Joe Schauble. Al was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jacqueline Leaffer, his two brothers, John and Don, and his parents. Funeral Mass will be Saturday March 22, 2014, at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pullman, followed by burial and church reception.
