Alma Marie Knopes, 78, of Colfax passed away peacefully at her home on October 26, 2014 after a brief illness. At Alma's request, no services will be held. She was born on January 25, 1936 in Hof, Germany to Hans and Marie (Schorner) Schaller. She grew up in Germany, attended the local schools and graduated from high school in Hof. She lived in Germany and worked as a line cook and various other jobs until 1970 when she met Harold E. Knopes, an Air Force officer who was on assignment in Germany. Alma moved back to the United States with Harold and the couple married in Eugene, Oregon in 1972. After Harold retired from the Air Force in 1976, the couple moved to Colfax to be closer to his parents and have made their home just outside of town since that time. Alma enjoyed sewing and maintained a small rose garden. She was also an avid bowler and played on the Colfax Ladies bowling league for many years. She is survived by her husband Harold Knopes of Colfax; son Karl Schaller of Utah; sister Gisela Van Daele of British Columbia; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many extended family members. Memorial contributions in Alma's honor are suggested to the Whitman Hospital Foundation or to a charity of choice. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
