Obituary

Arthur G. "Archie" Magon, a long time Colfax resident, passed away at his home and surrounded by loved ones on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016 in Spokane. He was 94. Viewing will be Thursday from 9 to 5 at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax and for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Funeral Services will be Friday, April 1st, at 1:00 pm at the Colfax United Methodist Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Colfax Cemetery. Archie was born November 17, 1921 in Kansas City, Missouri to Tony and Grace (Hose) Magon. He grew up in the little town of Gardner, Missouri and completed his high school education there. Archie fibbed about his age in order to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1939. He served as a radio communications technician and lineman during World War II. Archie completed basic training at Ft. Lewis in Washington and his tour included stations all across the Northern parts of Africa and up into Italy. One of the most memorable parts of his duty included the days of marching through Italy and liberating the villages. He was honorably discharged from the Army July 2, 1945. He returned to the States through Ft. Lewis and while standing in line at the employment office in Tacoma he met a beautiful girl named Evelyn Wilson and he offered her a ride. They dated for a short time and were married March 9, 1946 in Tacoma. Archie and Evelyn made their home in Spokane and after looking for a job for a while and being unsuccessful, Archie enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He flew on the B-29 bomber as a tail gunner during the Korean War. Archie flew in 63 bombing mission over Korea. He was honorably discharged as a Tech Sgt. in 1952 and returned to his young family. That same year they moved to Colfax and settled in their home on "J" street. He began working for the Continental Baking Company as the "wonder bread" man and held that route for the next twenty years. He also worked nights as the projectionist at The Rose Theatre in Colfax and his kids have very fond memories of sitting up in the booth with him. He and Evelyn were very involved in the Colfax Jay-Cee's. They also liked to spend time at Williams Lake with friends, enjoyed rock hounding, and always kept a tidy yard and garden. Archie was quick to share his bounty with anyone he could. He loved airplanes and trains. He loved big band music and they also belonged to the Colfax Elk's where they were often the first on and the last off the dance floor. Archie and Evelyn were members of the Colfax United Methodist Church. He loved animals of all kinds. He always enjoyed having deer come into his yard to eat from the apple tree and he brought many strays home over the years that he helped nurse back to a full life. He began a second career as the facilities manager for the Whitman County Courthouse. He loved his job at the courthouse; especially visiting with all the staff and patrons. Archie could fix anything and worked on the courthouse clock until he got it going. He also liked to pump Christmas music out to the town from that clock tower. He retired after several years but always reminisced fondly of his time with the county. He and Evelyn loved to take Sunday drives. Archie wasn't one to sit still and he kept active in the community. He was the Past-Commander of the Colfax VFW Post. He was very instrumental in beginning the Memorial Day flag display at the Colfax Cemetery. The annual display of flags for area veterans has grown to include almost 300 flags to date. Had Archie not entered the Army when he did; he was on track to becoming a funeral director in his home town in Missouri. He fulfilled that lifelong dream when he began working at Bruning Funeral Home as an assistant. For nearly two decades Archie helped take care of his fellow citizens by assisting in their funerals. It was a job he performed with honor, dignity and humility. Archie considered his time at the funeral home as his true calling. He and Evelyn moved to Spokane in 2006 to be closer to family but his heart never truly left Colfax. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family at his apartment home in Spokane. He helped many residents with their gardens there. He loved to drive out to Greenbluff with family whenever he could. He will be missed by his three children; son Richard (Rick) and wife Kay of Minneapolis, MN; two daughters Kathy Thistle of Spokane & Claudia Cottle and husband Henry of Wasilla, AK; his "almost sister" Mary "Pete" Graham of New Mexico; 8 grandchildren and 9.5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Evelyn May 17, 2012 and by his parents. Memorial gifts are suggested to Gentiva Hospice. Online condolences may be sent to www.bruningfuneralhome.com
