Obituary

Brett Myers, 56, a lifetime resident of Pullman, passed away October 27, 2026, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, where he was being treated for a rare neurological disease. His wife Darcell and daughters Ari and Bree were by his side during the final days of his mortal sojourn.

Though known for many accomplishments, Brett found his greatest joy in his family. He and Darcell were sealed for time and all eternity in the Seattle Washington Temple, and their 34-year marriage was marked by love, devotion and companionship. Of all his titles, the ones he valued most were husband and father. His daughters meant everything to him, and he considered being their dad among the richest blessings of his life. A more recent title he cherished was father-in-law to Rodrigo Guerra. His love for his family was matched only by their love for him.

Brett dedicated his professional life to serving the people of Whitman County. He began his law enforcement career with the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office and was elected sheriff in 2002. He served tirelessly in that office until his recent illness forced his retirement. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington State University and a Master of Public Administration.

Brett was a disciple of Jesus Christ and a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a young man, he served a two-year mission in the Indiana Indianapolis Mission, and he continued to serve faithfully in many Church callings throughout his life. He was a Christlike example and a man of integrity to all who knew him.

Brett loved the outdoors in every form, and he found joy in pursuits that others might struggle to understand. An accomplished endurance athlete, he completed the IMTUF 100, a 100-mile race through the mountains of central Idaho, four times. Brett described the race as “a brutal, beautiful beast that grabs your soul from the moment you sign up until you limp across the finish line.” He was training for his fifth IMTUF when he was first hospitalized in September. For Brett, these extraordinary challenges were about far more than crossing a finish line. His philosophy on endurance reflected the way he approached life itself. He wrote: “It’s about relentless commitment, and the sacrifices that carve you into something better than you were.”

When he wasn’t at work or running countless miles, you could usually find him outside: competing in an Ironman, fishing on the Clearwater River, traveling to Alaska with his family, tending his bees, or simply manicuring his lawn. Brett lived with purpose, enthusiasm, and an appreciation for the world around him.

Brett’s life was defined by family, service, and sacrifice. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, quiet confidence, and compassion, and he will be deeply missed by family, friends, and the community he served. The love he gave, the example he set, and the lives he touched will remain an enduring legacy.

Brett is survived by his wife, Darcell Kessinger Myers; his daughters, Ari (Rodrigo) Guerra and Bree Myers; his mother, Linda Myers; and his siblings, Gordon, Tamara, and Tonja. He was preceded in death by his father, James Arneson Myers. He also loved, and was loved by, many nieces, nephews, in-laws, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The Myers family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff for the compassionate care they gave Brett and his family.

“The salmon swims upstream, metals are purified by fire, a plane takes off against the wind and strength is only obtained through resistance. The great things in life only come when we are willing to sacrifice the easy for the worthy.” Brett Myers
