Carl William Ruhs (95)

Carl William Ruhs, longtime Spokane resident passed away on December 6, 2016 due to age related causes at Pullman Regional Hospital. Carl had resided in Pullman for the past year. Carl was born on Feb. 8, 1921 in Audubon, Iowa to Edd and Mable (Brockway) Ruhs.

On June 26, 1948, Carl married Marian Lauretta DeCamp in Spokane where they made their home.

Carl enlisted in the United States Navy on November 27, 1942 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was stationed in Moscow and Farragut, Idaho and then aboard the USS West Virginia (BB48) in the South Pacific as a Machinist's Mate First Class.

Upon his return from the war in 1945 he moved to Spokane where he was employed as a body and fender repair person at Kaufman Buick. He later went to work for Allstate Insurance Company as a property damage claims supervisor. He then went to work for Spokane School District #81 as a janitor and retired on April 29, 1988. Carl was a member of the Spokane Yacht Club (serving once as Commodore), the Elks and VFW Post 1474. He and Marian enjoyed many years of boating, especially on Lake Roosevelt where they kept a boat a Seven Bays.

He is survived by his sons; Lester (Tracy) Ruhs of Pullman, Washington, and Leland Ruhs of Spokane, Washington; Granddaughters, Caitlin (Kyle) Hinrichs of Pullman, Washington, and Lauren (Cameron) Soller of Edgewood, Washington and great-granddaughter, Cora LeAnn Soller. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1991.

When asked how he wished to be remembered he would answer, "As a good citizen." Per his wishes, there will be no services. He asked that a portion of he and Marian's ashes be spread at Lake Roosevelt at a spot he had already picked out. Interment will occur at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, Washington.
