Obituary

Chanc L Hiatt, 53, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Colfax on March 25, 2025. He was born in California on May 14, 1971 to Jack and Kathleen (Streltzoff) Hiatt. At the young age of six, his mom remarried David Kinman and together they moved their family to Harrison, Idaho. It was here that Chanc attended a private Christian school in Plummer, Idaho. His senior year was spent at the Potlatch school where he excelled in many sports, especially football. He graduated from Potlach High School with the class of 1989. Following graduation, he moved to California for a short time to live with his dad where he played college football for San Jose State University. He returned back to the Palouse area where he worked for Bennett Lumber for seven years.  During this time, he married Jill Pedersen in 1995 and together they welcomed two children; Holly and Cameron. He then went on to attend the University of Idaho where he earned his B.S. in management information systems with emphasis in computer science and networking technologies. Chanc's love for football continued which landed him a spot on the semi-pro Palouse Thunder team playing as a safety. After retiring his jersey, he took many positions coaching his son throughout Cameron's childhood. He married Holly (Smith) Mackleit in 2005 and together they blended their families in Colfax.

Chanc had a big heart and loved his family dearly. You could always find him at a sporting event supporting his kids. Chanc loved to fish. He took his family on trips up the St. Joe River to Marble Creek where they would camp. He also took his family on a trip to California to see where he grew up, as well as a trip to Hawaii. Chanc was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan, there wasn't a game he missed watching. In 2017, Chanc was hired on as the new system administrator in the office of technology at Washington State University.

In 2018, he welcomed his first and only grandchild and quickly earned the title of "Papi"; which he loved nothing more. His love for fishing rubbed off on his children and grandson. On a couple occasions, Bud got to skip school to go fishing with Papi.

He is survived by his wife, Holly, at their home in Colfax; his four children, Holly and Cameron Hiatt both of Moscow, and Bailey and Averi Mackleit both of Colfax; his grandson, Bud Weitze; by his step-mother, Sharon Avila of Buhl, Idaho; and his aunt, Norma Streltzoff of Santa Ana, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; Kathleen and David Kinman and Jack Hiatt, and by his uncle, Kenneth Streltzoff.

If you wish to donate in Chanc's name, the family has suggested memorials to Spokane Falls Recovery Center; 101 E Magnesium Rd, Spokane, WA 99208.
