Obituary

On October 27, 2015, Clarence L. "Clay" Claypool went to be with his Lord after a five and half year battle with cancer. He was 87. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 31 at the Colfax United Methodist Church. A reception will follow.

Clay was born on November 10, 1927 in Malta, Montana to David & Gladys (Hoverson) Claypool. He and his family farmed in the Malta area until 1945 when they moved to a ranch at Laurin, Montana. After his graduation from Malta High School, Clay went on to attend Montana State College (now Montana State University) and graduated with a degree in Animal Industries.

He met Mae Luoma at a square dance during college. In 1951, the couple married and enjoyed 64 years of marriage together, including square dancing up until the last year. They lived in a variety of places while Clay worked in a number of positions, all involving cattle or production performance of beef cattle. In 1973 they moved to Colfax where Clay managed a herd of Simmental cattle for Lou Chestnut while also working on the side to grow his own herd. Clay was involved in state and national Simmental cattle associations, the Washington State and Whitman County Cattleman's Associations and Washington Beef Improvement. He served as president in both the Cattleman and Simmental Associations as well. Clay was always interested in beef improvement.

Clay was very active in the Colfax United Methodist Church, Gideons International, square dancing and he loved to garden. Many people received bounty from his gardens throughout the years. He was a loving husband to Mae and a caring father to his daughters. He also had a strong faith in the Lord that carried him through his health troubles the last few years.

Clay is survived by his loving wife Mae at their home in Colfax; daughters Donna Claypool of Spokane, Diann (Brian) Pommer of Missoula, Montana, Dellene Claypool of Spokane and Deana Claypool of Seattle. He is also survived by three sisters and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Memorial contributions in Clay's honor are suggested to the Gideon's International or the Colfax United Methodist Church. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
