Obituary

Clifford Wayne (Cliff) Holman

January 3, 1944 to December 10, 2018

Cliff was born to Glen and Thelma Holman in Rexburg, Idaho and grew up in Soap Lake with his older brother Richard and younger brother Dean.  He lived large portions of his 74 years in Soap Lake, Pullman, Alaska, Battle Ground, Long Beach and Kettle Falls.

Cliff married his high school sweetheart Cheryl on June 6, 1965 in Soap Lake and the couple remained married for the next 53 years until the time of his passing.  The couple had one son, Eric (Lisa) and one daughter Ann (Shane) Lee and two grandsons Elliott and Parker Lee.

In High School Cliff excelled at math and science.  He also played on the high school football, basketball and tennis teams.  During high school he also formed life-long friendships with Maurice Johnson, Don Cox and Fritz Rennebaum.  Also during high school Cliff initiated what would be a lifetime love of the outdoors pursuing the abundant geese, ducks and pheasants of rural eastern Washington during the 1960s.

Following high school, Cliff attended Washington State University (Go Cougs!) where he earned a Bachelor's degree majoring in Civil Engineering.  Cliff again excelled at school and after 4-years of college he was pursued by prospective employers and the academic community alike.  He decided to further his education when he was recruited by Stanford University, receiving a scholarship to continue on and earn his Masters in Engineering.

Cliff worked as an engineer and engineering consultant throughout his career.  He oversaw the construction of large-scale projects including the westbound Interstate 90 bridges over Denny Creek at Snoqualmie Pass, the South Bellevue Interchange of I-5 and I-90, as well as segments of the Alaska State Highway System, Alaskan dams, military facilities and schools.

Cliff was a lifelong fisherman.  He and Cheryl owned a house in Long Beach and kept a boat moored at Ilwaco.  The couple welcomed company in the form of family and friends to the coast for several decades enjoying adventures into the Pacific in search of salmon during the day and camaraderie, food and drinks in the evenings.  Cliff and Cheryl also fished together in both Alaska and Canada, adding halibut to their familiar salmon harvests.

Cliff was also a lifelong hunter.  He pursued deer, elk and pronghorn in several western states including Washington, Oregon, Wyoming and Colorado.  The hunts were enjoyed with family and friends spanning multiple generations and most recently included ventures afield with grandsons Elliott and Parker.

Cliff's final years were spent relaxing and enjoying casual fishing, spending time with Cheryl, enjoying time with his children and grandsons, "engineering" things around the house and rooting hard for the WSU football and basketball teams.

Cliff was a member of the WSU Alumni Association, Stanford Alumni Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Lake Roosevelt Walleye Club.

Cliff loved quietly but strongly, enjoyed life, work, family and friends.  He leaves behind a network of family and friends who will miss his intelligent, fun, positive and funny outlook on life and his companionship.  He additionally leaves his mark in the way of a transportation infrastructure over which many of you will continue to travel for many decades to come.  Finally, his charitable contributions will help assure that future Washington State and Stanford students bring new ideas and fresh minds to the engineering field.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to American Cancer Society or by donating blood.  A celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018 from 1 to 4 PM in the Banquet Room at The Resort at Soap Lake in Soap Lake, WA.  Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman, WA has been entrusted with arrangements.
