Obituary

Daralyn Ann Scheffert Hougardy, age 68, passed away peacefully in her home in Pullman, Washington on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. She battled Alzheimer's Disease for the last several years of her life and died of complications due to ovarian cancer.

Daralyn was born on May 21, 1955, in Grangeville, Idaho to Darrell and Bonnie Scheffert. She was the oldest of three siblings, all of whom grew up and went to school in Grangeville. Her childhood was filled with friendships, spending time at the church, and playing the piano. She developed a passion for nature through swimming in the river at Skookumchuck, picking huckleberries near Fish Creek, and exploring the Idaho backroads with her family. She was an active member of Job's Daughters and was crowned Honored Queen in 1972. She graduated from Grangeville High School in 1973.

After high school, she attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Oregon.  There she met her future husband, Don Hougardy, while playing trombone in the college band. The two enjoyed visiting the Oregon coast, watching live music, and skiing together. They were married in 1976. Daralyn pursued her interest in dental radiology at Lane Community College, which led to her teaching the subject as Don finished college at the University of Oregon. In 1985, after her father passed away unexpectedly, she and her family moved back to Grangeville to start the next chapter of their lives.

She dedicated her life to raising her two sons and instilling upon them the values and passions that she had developed while growing up in Grangeville: music, nature, and church. As her boys got older, she would drive them all around central Idaho so that they could pursue their own passions. Some of her favorite past times included watching the World Series, celebrating the Fourth of July, sharing a cup of coffee or glass of wine with friends, singing in the church choir, and visiting her brother, Paul, in San Francisco.

In 1999, the family moved to Moscow, Idaho. Soon after, Daralyn enrolled at the University of Idaho to pursue a degree in art, where she exhibited a high aptitude in recycled art and welding. Around the age of 60, she began powerlifting and within two years she won first place in the deadlift at a local competition in Moscow.

Throughout her final years, Daralyn enjoyed walking beneath tall white pines while listening to Ringo Starr, playing her favorite Billy Joel songs on the piano, and having a glass of sweet wine. She would often be seen around the Palouse wearing her bright pink and purple clothes, smiling and waving.

Daralyn had an ability to build deep relationships with those around her. Her curiosity and empathy often spurred long thoughtful conversations. Her sense of humor had people rolling on the ground with laughter. She was a loving wife and mother, and will be forever missed.

Daralyn is survived by her husband of 47 years, Don; her son Trevor (Andria) and two grandchildren, Iva and Atticus; her son Devin (Krisitin); and her two brothers Mark and Paul Scheffert.

A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Nazarene in Moscow, Idaho on Thursday, October 12th, 2023 at 1 pm.
