Dean Funabiki died at Whitman Hospital & Medical Center in Colfax, Washington on February 19, 2018 at the age of 67.
Dean was born on January 14, 1951 in San Jose, California to Mason Funabiki and Grace Mitsuyo Funabiki. He graduated with departmental honors from Stanford University in 1973, with a degree in psychology. He earned a Ph.D. in psychology in 1977 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook after serving a clinical internship at the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital.
Dr. Funabiki moved to Pullman in 1977 to begin work as an assistant professor at Washington State University. He spent a year in private practice in Los Angeles in 1982-83 before joining the Counseling Center at WSU from 1983 to 1987. In 1987, he started a private practice at Dean Funabiki, Ph.D. & Associates in Pullman. He was the first local practitioner to be certified in EMDR, a remarkably effective treatment for trauma that became his specialty.
Dr. Funabiki was active in the community, serving for many years on the Whitman County Mental Health advisory board. He was a Cougar fan and an enthusiastic athlete, participating in the Comets Track Club and playing tennis. He was the founder and manager of the Palouse Tennis Club and organized several tennis tournaments and regional USTA teams. Dean was a capable auto mechanic and a gifted woodworker. His family cherishes the beautiful furniture and boxes that he created.
Dean is survived by his wife, Ruth at their Pullman home; daughters Abby (Pullman, WA) and Emily (Portland, OR); brothers Guy (Luci) in Palo Alto, CA, & John (Amy) in Alameda, CA; sisters Nancy Lim (Ron) & Mimi Funabiki (Herb) along with numerous nieces and nephews.
