Obituary

EASTWOOD, DeLyle

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to DeLyle Eastwood. DeLyle passed away peacefully at Bishop's Place in Pullman, Washington on October 30, 2015 after a long battle with Parkinsons Disease.
Born November 19, 1932 in Dayton, Ohio, to parents Earl Vivian Eastwood and Thelma Yelton Eastwood, she grew up in Pennsylvania and Florida. She attended college at Transylvania College in Lexington, Kentucky and the University of Chicago (MS and PhD, 1964). She was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University.
A physical chemist, known for her pioneering work in Fluorescence Spectroscopy, DeLyle was a mentor and pioneer for women working in science. Over the years, she did work for the Air Force Institute of Technology, The EPA, UNLV, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the USDA, University of South Carolina, Harvard University and the University of Idaho. She coauthored hundreds of papers and was known as an expert in her field, serving as a technical expert with national responsibilities for Superfund and DOD environmental programs and groundwater monitoring for hazardous and toxic waste.
She was most proud of the 1978 DOT Silver Medal for Oil Spill Identification, which enabled the United States Coast Guard to better identify those responsible for oil spills in open water. She also was a Fellow in ASTM international and active member in the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) as well as the American Chemical Society.
DeLyle was a witty conversationalist and a delight to be around, enjoying good food and good company. She loved science fiction, archaeology, travel and theater.
DeLyle was predeceased by her brother Douglas Eastwood and her sister Ellin Eastwood Carter. She is survived by her two nieces, Susan Eastwood and Vanda Hughes, and her three nephews, John Eastwood, Dan Eastwood and Tony Sucheston, and by her grand-nieces Erin, Megan and Emma and grand-nephews Alex, Max, Aidan and Bryce and a great-grand-nephew Jacob. She will be missed by her many faithful friends and her family.
No public services are planned. Kimball Funeral Home and Crematory of Pullman, WA is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial contributions to the National Organization for Women http://now.org/, of which DeLyle was an early member, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research https://www.michaeljfox.org/ or the Parkinsons Disease Foundation http://www.pdf.org/.
