Obituary

Dorothy Repp, longtime Colfax resident, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Whitman Hospital in Colfax. She was 95. Funeral Services will be Friday, December 18th at 11:00 am at Peace Lutheran Church with burial following in the Colfax Cemetery. Temperance Dorothy Repp was born June 23, 1920 in Wellington, Colorado to Joseph and Ida Mae (Hibbs) Smith. She grew up in the small town of Hawksprings, Wyoming and was a star basketball player for the high school team there. Her love of sports developed as a young lady and continued throughout her life. Dorothy graduated from high school in 1938 and soon moved to Wenatchee, Washington where her brother had gone for a job. While attending a dance in Wenatchee she met David Repp and after courting him for exactly six weeks the couple married at the Repp home in Colfax November 9, 1940. Dorothy worked at the Korner Koffee Kup in Colfax when they were newly married and David was soon drafted into the U.S. Navy as part of the World War II effort. With a young son at home and finances tight as they were, Dorothy would often take in extra laundry or ironing work from people in town. She also sorted peas for the Rogers Seed Company. David was honorably discharged in December 1945 and made his way back to Colfax arriving on Christmas Eve. Dorothy loved to tune the radio to the World Series and would often keep score sheets on her own. She carried an enthusiastic interest in sports throughout her life and was often vocal enough at games that David preferred to sit in the upper section of the bleachers rather than courtside. Having been confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in 1942 Dorothy was extremely involved in the church. She had been a Sunday school teacher for many years, served on the church council, and worked as the church secretary for over thirty years. Dorothy worked as a school cook in the newly opened Jennings elementary school and later transferred to the new high school. She worked for a time as a dental assistant to Dr. Melvin Binder before returning to the high school as the head cook. She was instrumental in the creation of the "ala carte" meal which proved to be extremely popular with the students and is a concept now widely used around the state. Many teachers, townspeople and even salesmen would come to the high school to eat one of Dorothy's meals, especially her cinnamon rolls and chili. She retired in 1982. Dorothy loved spending time with her family, going for "Sunday" drives, and following all of her grandchildren in their sporting activities. Dorothy and David were especially close to his brother Jim and his wife Gloria and their families lived side-by-side for over 65 years. Dorothy is survived by her sons David, Jr. and Lyndell Repp, Colfax, and Gary and Sue Repp of Spokane Valley; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband David in 2012 and by 3 brothers and 8 sisters. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax is caring for the family.
