Obituary

Ed Getz, lifelong Colfax resident, died on September 25, 2017 at his home in Colfax. He was 64. A graveside service will be held in the Colfax Cemetery on Friday, October 6th, at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception at the Colfax Eagles Lodge.

Edward Jacob Getz was the baby boy spoiled by his two older sisters growing up in the Penawawa and Onecho areas around Colfax. He was born January 28, 1953 to Jacob, Jr. and Eileen Magee Getz. Ed was a quiet kid growing up until pushed to a point and he played football in school. Ed learned a good work ethic growing up as he helped on his parent's farm. He graduated from Colfax High School in 1972. He attended Spokane Community College where he completed technical school in welding. He also survived a short stint as a bull rider.

Ed married Mikelyn Shahan on March 23, 1973 and they made their home in the Penawawa area and worked on the farm. Ed and Mikelyn had three boys, Darrel, Doug, and Kirby bless their home. Ed worked for the Iron Workers Union and welded in places like Pasco and Lacey, Washington among many others. He also worked for Pfaff Construction out of Colfax. While living in Diamond, Ed served as a first responder – a volunteer job he was always proud to have done. He was a loyal member to the Eagles Lodge, the Elks, and he especially enjoyed activities with the Colfax Jay-Cee's. Ed was part of SkyMagic which brought grand fireworks displays to towns and communities all over the Palouse for about ten years. Ed loved this hobby the most.

He married Brenda Balcom in Colfax on September 11, 1993. They enjoyed many family camping trips to Boyer Park and some of Ed's favorite times were those large gatherings full of family and friends. Ed played cards and although he rarely ever won there were those few times when he would "clean everyone's clocks". He also was an avid bowler and spent many years on league play at the Colfax Wheatland Lanes. Ed worked for Empire Disposal in Colfax for over 16 years as a truck driver and mechanic. He could drive any type of big rig and later worked a couple years at Wheatland Express in Pullman before landing his current job at the Washington State Department of Transportation. Ed always grinned when he drove down the road or turned the flagman's paddle.

He is survived by his wife Brenda at their Colfax home; 5 children, Darrel (Kate) and Doug (Rhonda) Getz all of Colfax, Kirby (Liz) Getz of Pullman, Brandi (John) Brink of Dusty and Austin Getz of Pullman; by 9 grandchildren of whom he was so proud, Jenna, Dani, Riley, Casey, Cameron, Meghan, Caleb, Myla and Alexia; and by his sister, Mary Beth Bothman of Rosalia and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and by a whole host of friends and co-workers. Ed was preceded in death by a sister, Jo Lynn Johnson in 2005 and by his parents. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Eagles Scholarship Fund or to a charity of your choice.
