Elizabeth F. "Betty" Frykman, 94, of Pullman passed away on Tuesday January 7, 2014 at the Bishop Place Memory Villas in Pullman with family at her side. Betty was born on December 19, 1919 in Hendersonville, North Carolina, the only child to R. Bruce & Alpha (Weltzin) Fulton. At a young age her family moved to East Orange, New Jersey. Before her senior year of high school her family moved to California and she graduated high school in Richmond.
She attended one year of college at San Jose State and it was there she met George Frykman while riding the bus to campus. The couple married on June 14, 1942 in Menlo Park, California. After their marriage, George & Betty lived in a number of different places while George served in the Army Air Corps. After his discharge they moved back to Menlo Park where George completed his Masters and Doctorate degrees at Stanford University.
In 1950, George & Betty moved their family (now including her two oldest daughters Alice and Jean) to Pullman where George accepted a position with Washington State University. The couple made Pullman their permanent home and added their youngest daughter Mary to the family.
Betty was a long-standing member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir for many years. She was also active in the ladies quilt group. She loved to garden, cook and took great pride in caring for her family and was known for her Swedish pot roast. During retirement, she and George spent time traveling the world on many European vacations as well as a number of cruises.
She is survived by her daughters Alice Marong of Pullman; Jean (Jerry) Morse of Pullman and Mary (Jack Hopkins) Braun of Albion; two grandchildren Serign (Visa) Marong of Olympia and Lisa Morse of Pullman and great grandchildren Alieu and Tairu Marong. She was preceded in death by her husband George who passed away in 2004.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday January 21, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pullman, with a reception to follow at the church. Private family committal services will be held at the Pullman Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Betty's honor are suggested to Lutheran World Relief.
