ESTHER C. DITTMER, 92, of Moscow, passed away on May 13, 2014 at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, ID of age related causes. Esther was born Aug. 14, 1921 in Chicago, IL to William & Frances (Miehle) Miller. She grew up in Chicago and completed her education at Woodburn Trade School. Esther enlisted in the US Army and was one of the original members of the WAC (Women's Army Corp) serving during World War II. It was during this time that she met Philip Dittmer Jr., who was also serving in the US Army and they married on Nov. 17, 1945. Following their honorable discharges the couple made their home in Chicago for a number of years and in 1968 moved to St. Louis, MO where she resided until moving to Moscow, ID in 1996, making her home at the Good Samaritan Village until her death. Esther was a loving homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother, always putting her family first. She was an active volunteer throughout her life with the Telephone Pioneers of America and the American Red Cross, working on Blood Drives. Esther was an accomplished pianist and organist, making music a focal point of her life. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and other needle work as well as letter writing, bingo, and playing cards. Esther loved to read with Cassie Edwards being her favorite writer. She was once included on the dedication page on one of Cassie Edwards works. Esther was an active resident at Good Samaritan Village throughout the years and was twice named Volunteer of the year at Good Sam's in 2007 & 2008. Esther was a member of the Lutheran Church throughout her life and attended Concordia Lutheran Church in Pullman. She is survived by her daughter Marge (Wayne) Crowder of Pullman; her son Glenn (Soontorn) Dittmer of Mabank, TX; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren & 4 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Philip in 1991; one great granddaughter and her parents. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 10:30 AM in the Chapel of Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, ID. Interment will take place at a later date at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Kimball Funeral Home & Crematory of Pullman, WA is caring for the family.
