Obituary

FRANK A. LOEWUS, 94, of Pullman, WA passed away peacefully on January 21, 2014 at Bishop Place Senior Living in Pullman. Frank was born on Oct. 22, 1919 in Duluth, Minnesota. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Minnesota in 1942, then enlisted in the Army Air Corps, underwent officers training, served as a First Lieutenant in the Pacific Theater during World War II and as an intelligence officer in occupied Japan until 1946. After his honorable discharge from active duty, Frank continued his education at the University of Minnesota, receiving a Masters of Science in 1950 and his Ph.D., in biochemistry in 1952. Early on in his studies, Frank met the love of his life Mary. They married on December 26, 1947. Frank worked at the University of Chicago from 1952 to 1955, then at the USDA Western Regional Research Lab in Albany, California until 1964. He was a professor in the Department of Biology at the State University of New York at Buffalo from 1965 to 1975 and also a summer instructor in charge of experimental marine botany at the Marine Biological Labs in Woods Hole, MA from 1970 to 1974. In 1975, Frank and Mary moved to Pullman, WA where worked at Washington State University until 1990 when he retired as a professor emeritus and fellow emeritus of the Institute of Biochemistry. He enjoyed gardening and traveling. Frank is survived by his wife Mary and their three children, Rivkah, David, and Daniel, as well as six grandchildren. No public services are being planned at this time. Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman, WA is caring for the family.
