IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Garrell
Long
June 29, 1943 – October 5, 2023
Dr. Garrell E. Long passed away at his Pullman residence 5 October 2023. Garrell was born 29 June 1943 and grew up with his grandparents. Garrell (Gary) often told stories about Pappy's BBQ stand on Lamar Street in Dallas Texas. He played high school football and was a lifelong fan of the sport, attending each of WSU's home games in 2023. Gary was an Army Medic serving in South Korea 1966-7. He graduated with a BS (Biology 1968) and with a MS (Zoology 1971) from Arizona State University. Gary completed his PhD (Zoology 1974) at Washington State University (the only member of his family to gain a doctorate). He joined the WSU Entomology Department as Research Associate (1974-76), before being promoted to Assistant Professor ( 1976-81), Associate Professor (1981-1988), when he was selected as Chair of the Department of Entomology (1988-96). Gary was a Distinguished Visiting Scholar (1985) at the University of Adelaide and a Senior Fulbright Scholar (1986) at the University of Papua New Guinea. Professor Long taught Insect Ecology and Crop Loss Assessment both at WSU and at the Universities of Chile and Costa Rica.
Gary and his wife Alice (Hansen) lived in Pullman until his retirement in 2000. Gary and Alice lived in Port Lavaca Texas, where they worked for the Red Cross for eight years, before moving to Marathon Florida. Gary and Alice were Master Sailors certified to carried passengers on 50 foot long yachts in the Caribbean and the South Pacific. Gary was an avid fisherman, mainly a fly fisherman in the lower 48, but an annual salmon fisherman in Alaska, most recently in August 2023. Gary was an outdoors man, but when in Pullman he enjoyed meeting weekly with a group of retired friends and colleagues at a local watering hole for wide-ranging discussion . Garrell is survived by his brother Michael and sister-in-law Susan of Prescott Valley AZ, daughters Elizabeth, and Aubrey, and long-time sailing companion and close friend Janet Maguire. At this time, no services are planned. Corbeill Funeral Home of Pullman is in charge of the arrangements. www.corbeillfuneralhomes.com
