IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Garvis B.
Hopwood
February 26, 1955 – January 2, 2026
Garvis B. Hopwood Jr., age 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved him on January 2, 2026 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA.
Garvis was born on February 26, 1955, in Dayton, Washington, and grew up in Prescott, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garvis Bernard Hopwood and Frances Joan Pitzen; his sister, Sharon Herrington; and his nephew, Les Doering.
He is survived by his sister, Nancy Kelly; his wife, Kathy Hopwood, to whom he remained married though separated for many years; and his two sons, Garvis James Hopwood and his spouse, Mekesha, and Kyle Steven Hopwood and his spouse, Veronica. He was also a proud grandfather to multiple grandchildren from both of his sons.
Garvis was a devoted uncle and shared close bonds with his nieces and nephews, all of whom meant a great deal to him. From his late sister Sharon Herrington, he is survived by Christopher Herrington and Julie McCormick. From his sister Nancy Kelly, he is survived by Brian Doering.
Garvis formed lifelong friendships and valued them deeply. He shared a special bond with his close friend Penny Taufen, who remained faithfully by his bedside until the end. He was also comforted by the presence of many friends who were able to say goodbye, including Bob Osmonovich, one of his closest childhood friends, with whom he shared many daring adventures and lasting memories.
Garvis began working at R&R Cable Company at a young age, dedicating his career to supplying local towns with communication infrastructure—from traditional telephone lines to modern fiber optics. After many years of hard work, he retired at the age of 56.
Following retirement, Garvis enjoyed spending time with family and being outdoors. He especially loved camping and fishing, finding peace and happiness in nature. He was known as a loving and caring man who would help anyone in need, always willing to lend a hand without expecting anything in return.
Garvis will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, and the meaningful connections he built throughout his life. He leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, and quiet generosity that will live on in all who knew him.
