Shired "Gary" Shirey, 71, of Pullman, Washington passed away at his home on June 26, 2014. At Gary's request, no formal services will be held, but a private family memorial will be held at a later date.
Gary was born on November 10, 1942 in Santa Monica, California to Sherman Garfield "Boots" & Charlotte Arlene (Bray) Shirey. Shortly after he was born, the family moved to Buffalo, Oklahoma where Gary grew up and attended school. While in high school Gary excelled as an athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball, earning the honor of All-State in baseball. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1960. After graduation he attended one year of college on a baseball scholarship, and later coached many years for a summer league baseball program.
On September 3, 1961 Gary married Connie Sue Aldridge, his high school sweetheart and the couple moved to southern California. It was in Santa Monica, California that their son Sheldon Gary and daughter Dawndi Sue were born. Gary moved his family to Laverne, Oklahoma in 1971 where he worked the majority of his career as a measurement technician in the oil and gas industry. He later became very involved in the natural health field. Gary and Connie moved to Pullman in 2007 to be closer to family and Gary greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Gary is survived by Connie, his wife of 53 years; son Sheldon and wife Debi; daughter Dawndi; grandchildren Taylor Rae, Sheldon Grant, Alexandra SariAnne and Gabriel Dain and one great-grandson Jaxon Daniel, all of Pullman. He is also survived by his sister Sandra McNaughton of Oologah, Oklahoma, brother Forrest Martin "Skip" Shirey of Miami, Oklahoma, as well as nieces and nephews, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law John McNaughton, nephew Richard Brett McNaughton, and in-laws Gene and Lucille Aldridge. Memorial contributions in Gary's honor are suggested to the Whitman County Humane Society, PO Box 453 or Friends of Hospice, PO Box 484, both in Pullman, Washington 99163.
