Gerald (Gerry) Stubbs passed away June 11, 2016 from complications of lymphoma. He was born April 6, 1936 in Madison, WI to Merle and Erna (Domke) Stubbs. He was the oldest of three children, and spent the majority of his childhood in Moscow, ID. He graduated from Moscow High School in 1954, where he excelled in football and FFA. He attended the University of Idaho for one year before enlisting in the Navy. Following his military service, he worked in the family business, Stubbs Seed Services in Moscow, and on farms in the area including the farm of his future father-in-law near LaCrosse, WA. He and Angie (Angelene Moore) were married September 9, 1959 in Endicott. Gerry and Angie worked and farmed near Troy, ID until 1972 when they moved to LaCrosse to farm with her parents. He was a lifelong farmer whose goal was to leave the land in better condition than when he received it. He was passionate about conserving soil through no-till farming and he was always open to trying new crops and progressive farming techniques, for which his family will forever be grateful. When asked why he wanted to take on the risk of no-till farming late in his farming career, Gerry would say "Because it's the right thing to do!" Gerry embraced precision agriculture, and he farmed until his illness required him to stop in April, 2016. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and had enjoyed numerous fishing and hunting trips to Alaska. Gerry was always willing to lend a helping hand to others, and he was unwavering in his support of his grandchildren's sports, 4-H, FFA and all other activities.
Gerry was a member of the Dusty Gun Club, and a lifetime member of the Pacific Northwest Direct Seed Association. He was a past member of the LaCrosse School Board and the Whitman Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. In 2005, he was honored as the national "Champion of Conservation" by the Conservation Technology Information Center.
Gerry is survived by his wife, Angie; son Michael and daughter-in-law Tami Stubbs, LaCrosse; granddaughter Kirsten Stubbs, Olympia, WA; grandson Matthew Stubbs, Ft. Collins, CO; and granddaughter Lauren Stubbs, LaCrosse. He is also survived by his sister Judy Marineau, Moscow, ID and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gene Stubbs.
The family extends special thanks to Drs. Candelaria and Johnson, the staff of Whitman Health & Rehabilitation Center, and the ICU staffs of Holy Family and Sacred Heart Hospitals for their compassion and care for Gerry.
