Gwelda Jean (MacDermid) Henning passed away May 18, 2026 at Liberty Lake, WA at the age of 94. She was born on September 1, 1931 in Charlottenburgh Township, Glengarry County, Ontario Canada to Charles Nelson MacDermid and Margaret Ellen (Willey) MacDermid. She was the third of four girls born in the family. The family lived in Ontario until they moved to Niagara Falls when she was in junior high school and lived there for three years. The family then moved to the Rosalia/Thornton, WA area after World War II as her father obtained a job with his family at the Helmer Hardware store. Gwelda graduated as salutatorian of her class at Rosalia High School in 1949. She met her husband, Gene Henning, of Malden, WA at a Plaza Grange dance in Plaza, WA. They were married on March 6, 1953 at the Rosalia Christian Church. After their marriage, they made their home near Malden, where she would spend the majority of her life. She was very proud to become a naturalized United States Citizen in 1957.
They raised four children on the farm near Malden: Nancy (Terry) Cochran of Colfax, WA; Tom (Peggy) Henning of Rosalia, WA; Sally (Gary) Hommel of Belgrade, MT; and Mark (Dawn) Henning of Omaha, NE In addition to her children, she is survived by grandchildren: Maggee (Nick) Davis; Ben (Taylor) Cochran; Sara (Matt) Henning-Floyd; Randy (Amee) Henning; Nathan Hommel; Matthew Hommel; Ashlee (Emeron) Christensen and Kimmee Henning. There are nine great grandchildren: Waylon, Zaidee, Murphee, Case, Louden, Kinsey, Hadley, Emery, and Ripley.
Gwelda loved to be outside working in her yard and garden with beautiful flowers and produce. She loved eating fresh tomatoes from her garden and enjoyed quilting, sewing, and reading. She was a lifetime member of the Kenova Grange #556; Malden Order of Eastern Star #146; Malden Community Church; LWB of the Malden Community Church and the Rosalia Gifted Granny’s.
Gene preceded her in death in 2017, as well as her parents and her beloved sisters: Kay Bartholomew, Maxine Wood and Winnie Murphy.
A burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2nd, at the Pine City Cemetery, Pine City, WA followed by a memorial service at the Malden Community Church at 11:00 a.m. Following the service there will be a catered lunch at the Malden Community Center.
