He was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii and served four years aboard the destroyer escort USS McGinty during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in November of 1954 at the rank of Metalsmith 2nd Class.

After his military service concluded, Harold returned home to farm and, in 1958, married Carol Rhuby. Together they raised three children – Randy, Karen & Roger. Harold was a 15 year member of the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Oakesdale Grain Growers Board and a longstanding member of the Oakesdale Masonic Lodge #55.

Harold is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol; sons Randy and Roger and daughter Karen, as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Eva Jean Saldin. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department or to a cause that works for the betterment of life in Whitman County. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax has been entrusted with arrangements.
