IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harrie
Hess
March 1, 1929 – December 14, 2018
Harrie F. Hess, beloved father, scholar, professor emeritus, psychologist, humanist, environmental activist, and champion masters' runner, crossed the finish line on December 14, 2018 at Bishop Place Assisted Living in Pullman, WA.
Harrie was born in Hammond, Indiana, in 1929. His parents divorced when he was seven years old, and he and his mother (Adelaide) and brothers (Louis and Peter) moved in with their Grandfather Fox, who was a physician and one of the greatest influences in Harrie's life. When Harrie was 13, his mother married William (Bill) Deutsch, and the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.
After graduating from Las Vegas High School, Harrie attended the University of Nevada, Reno, where he majored in Spanish and psychology. In 1950, he married Beverly Jones, and then graduated and enlisted in the Army in 1952, working as a medical assistant. In 1954, Harrie and Beverly had a son, Bryant Clark Hess. After being honorably discharged and relieved from active duty in 1955, Harrie attended the University of Colorado, where he obtained his Ph.D. in psychology. He and Beverly later divorced.
After living in Oregon for several years and working at the University of Oregon Medical School, Harrie returned home to Las Vegas, where he took a faculty position in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He also developed a thriving private practice in which he specialized in psychological assessment. A significant part of his practice involved the creation, implementation, and oversight of the psychological testing program for personnel at the Nevada Test Site, where he was the psychological consultant for over 30 years. Harrie also served as President of the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association and President of the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology, as well as Chair of the Department of Psychology at UNLV. While living in Las Vegas, Harrie (who at that time was a single Dad to Bryant) met and married Michele Dalton, and adopted her daughter Krista. Together they had another daughter, Danielle. Harrie and Michele later divorced.
In 1984, Harrie met the love of his life, Lana LaVoie, soon to become Lana Hess. In between travelling the world, Harrie and Lana lived in Las Vegas, St. George, and Mesquite. They were both fluent in Spanish and especially loved travelling to Mexico together, in particular Lake Chapala. Harrie and Lana also took frequent road trips in the southwest, spending as much time as possible in the national parks and enjoying opera, musicals, and plays in Logan and Cedar City.
In the early 1980s, Harrie took up distance running as a masters runner. He quickly became a local champion in Las Vegas as well as an age-group champion throughout the western United States, amassing course records and a roomful of trophies, ribbons, and other accolades. He continued running marathons and other distances through his 70s; he stopped running in his 80s but remained a dedicated power-walker and hiker. He was a familiar figure in Mesquite, where he walked to the Casablanca Hotel for coffee nearly every day.
Harrie was a life-long learner and secular humanist, which is not the absence of belief but rather a strong belief in the inherent ability of humankind to lead ethical and meaningful lives without resort to a higher power. Outspoken, fearless, and tenacious, Harrie exemplified this belief by fighting to protect the environment as well as to promote other important causes. He served on the Mesquite Energy Task Force for many years and in 2007, helped lead an effort in Mesquite to defeat the proposed nearby construction of the Toquop coal-fired plant. He also was a spokesperson and proponent for the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act, which helped limit exposure to second-hand smoke in restaurants and other areas but in his opinion did not go far enough.
Harrie is survived by his "beloved," Lana Hess; his daughters, Krista Lynn Smith (Gilbert Smith) and Danielle Adelaide Hess (Michael Varnum); his granddaughters, Lindsay Rose Hess, Ashley Marie Ackerman, Haley Hess Varnum, and Megan Hess Varnum; and his brothers Peter Hess, Marshall Deutsch, and Tom Hess. He is predeceased by his son, Bryant Clark Hess, and his brother, Louis Hess. We would like to express our profound gratitude to the dedicated staff at Bishop Place Assisted Living and Kindred Hospice, as well as to Harrie's personal caregiver, Stephanie, who did her best to keep up with him on their daily walks.
No services are being planned for this time. Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman, WA has been entrusted with arrangements.
