Obituary

Jack Wesley French, Spokane resident, passed away July 30, 2011 at the Hospice of Spokane. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Maplewood Gardens Retirement Center in Spokane at 10 a.m. Urn burial will follow in the Colfax Cemetery. Jack was born September 1, 1928 in Queen City, Texas to DeWitt and Myrtle French. He was part of a large, close knit family growing up in the depression. His early days were spent in East Texas. The family moved to West Texas later and Jack attended high school in Amarillo. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy just as the occupation of Japan was getting under way. He trained in San Diego where he learned hair-cutting and served as a barber aboard the U.S.S. Iowa. He later served at the naval station in Bremerton before his honorable discharge in 1949. He married his first wife, Mary Jean McRae, in 1947 and they later divorced. Jack moved to Spokane where he began working for the J.C. Penney Company in their hair salon. He married Evelyn Dayton in Spokane on February 28, 1953. Jack then owned and operated French's Styling Salon along Sprague Avenue for many years. For the next twelve years or so they made their home on Spokane's South Hill. In 1965 Jack bought a cattle ranch across the border in Idaho, near Post Falls. He loved the cattle operation, thoroughly enjoyed working outside and always raised a large vegetable garden. He loved his dogs, cattle and goats. Jack continued to commute into the salon each day for work until his retirement in 1998. In 2005, he and his wife returned to Spokane. He is survived by his wife Evelyn; sons Jon (Sheryl) of Seattle, David of Coeur d'Alene, ID, and Joseph (Heidi) of Liberty Lake, WA and daughters Syble (Roger) Anderson of Kent, WA and Judi (Jack) Johnstone of Auburn, WA; two brothers, John "J.W." French and Martin "Bo" French and a sister, Joan Blackburn as well as 7 grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Tiffany, Stokke, Troy, Jeff, Travis and Tami, and 8 great-grandchildren: Bryson, Olsen, Norman, Ruby, Drake, Hunter, Drew and Logan. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Pamela, sister Syble, and brothers DeWitt "Bunk" Jr., Joe, his twin, and Huey. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to the Northwest Parkinson's Foundation and Make-a-Wish Foundation. On-line guest book is at www.bruningfuneralhome.com
