On March 3, 2017, the Lord took our most beautiful wife, adoring mother, loving grandmother, great grandmother, and true friend. Jacquelyn "Jackie" Bloom-McEwen Henderson of Colfax died peacefully at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center. She was 91 years old. A memorial service will take place Saturday, March 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the Baptist Church in Colfax following a family burial at the Colfax Cemetery.
Jackie was born in Colfax on November 7, 1925 to Gladyce and Lewis Bloom. Lewis Bloom died when Jackie was five. Gladyce married R.V. "Mac" McEwen, who adopted Jackie. Jackie was an only child and grew up at the family home on Meadow Street in Colfax.
Jackie attended Colfax High School with her future husband Joe Henderson and graduated in 1944. They married February 21, 1947, and celebrated their 70th anniversary with family two weeks before her death. Jackie and Joe had their first child, son Phil (Flip) Henderson, in 1948 and daughter JoLynn in 1951. They made their home in Colfax for ten years before moving to their current home on Prune Orchard Road.
Jackie was by her husband's side as he built a successful career at Arrow Machinery. She enjoyed hosting friends at their home on Prune Orchard Road, at their property at Hayden Lake and taking trips with friends to the Oregon Coast. Jackie was an avid reader and gardener; she took pride in her petunias and gladiolas each spring and summer. She was fond of all animals, especially the many ponies, chickens, horses and dogs that became part of the family through the years. Jackie was especially fond of horses, having been princess at the Lewiston Roundup in 1945 and then sharing that love of horses with her son and daughter. Jackie taught Sunday school and was an active member of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Colfax. She was also an active member of Eastern Star, the PTA, room mother and was a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed playing the organ and piano and baking in the kitchen. She made wonderful cakes that were sold and served at the Elk Drug Store soda fountain.
Jackie is survived by her husband Joe, son Phil (Barbara) Henderson of Colfax, daughter JoLynn (Mike) Duncan of Hayden Lake, Idaho, cousin Steve Dickson (Michele) of La Habra, California, grandson Destry (Jodi) Henderson, granddaughters Chappell (Cory) Henderson Smith, Heather (Michael) Duncan Lehman, and Holly (Jesse) Duncan Abeel, and great granddaughter Ellie Henderson.
The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Plymouth Congregational Church in Colfax, the Friends of Whitman County Library or the Shriner's Hospital for Children in Spokane. On-line guest book is at www.bruningfuneralhome.com
