Obituary

James “Jim” Monroe Hatley, 90, of Pullman, WA passed away April 14, 2026 at Regency Pullman Assisted Living. Jim was born August 16, 1935 in Pullman, WA to Cecil & Marie (Gallagher) Hatley. He grew up in Pullman and graduated from Pullman High School. Jim attended Washington State University before serving in the United States Navy until his honorable discharge in 1961. Jim married Betty Gillespie on September 12, 1953 in Pullman, where together they made their home on the farm. Jim farmed his entire life and later worked in the insurance industry as an agent and crop adjustor, and then for Nu-Chem/Helena. He loved woodworking, creating cabinets, chairs and anything someone needed. He loved his family and time spent together. Jim was a member of the American Legion, Ewartsville Grange, the Washington State Farm Bureau, as well as the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge. He is survived by his daughter Lael (Randy) Brickey of Pullman; his grandchildren Jim (Kim) Brickey; Brandy (Michael) Zimmerman and his great grandchildren Carlee & Aubree Brickey; Mercedes Schmeling & Miranda Rogue. Jim was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 2025. A graveside service is planned for later this spring at the Pullman Cemetery.
