JANE HARRIS ERICSON, 95, of Lacey, WA and formerly a longtime Pullman, WA resident passed away on March 11, 2014 in Lacey, WA.
Jane was born Aug. 22, 1918 in
Tyrone
,
New Mexico
to Frank & Selma (Chestnut) Harris.
The family moved to
Salt Lake City
,
UT
in 1927 where Jane completed her early education and graduated from High school.
She attended Westminster Collegiate Institute, later received her B.S. degree in 1939 from the
University
of
Utah
and in 1942 received her M.S. degree from
Wellesley
College
in
Massachusetts
in Physical Education.
She married Elvin G. Ericson on Aug. 17, 1963.
Jane's career in physical education spanned many years including public schools, the American Red Cross,
University
of
Texas
,
University
of
Southern California
and her long distinguished career as professor of physical education at
Washington
State
University
beginning in 1952 when she moved to
Pullman
until her retirement in 1977.
In addition to teaching, Jane was an accomplished writer whose publications included co-writing "Dance Awhile" and "File O'Fun Card File".
Jane was an active member of the Pullman community whose volunteer activities included Pullman Community Council on Aging, the exercise program Sit & Be Fit; meals on wheels, the Ridge Pointe Adult Community and of course her longtime membership with the Pullman Presbyterian Church where she was involved in all facets of church life including recreation for the youth program and the support and bereavement group that she helped establish in 1992.
Jane was also a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter FZ and the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.
Included in her many honors were being named Faculty Woman of the Year in 1975 at W.S.U and recipient of the National Dance Association Award in 1980.
Jane is survived by her stepdaughter Ardith Winiecki & husband Robert; her grandson Jeffery Winiecki and two great grandchildren Nathan & Cassandra; two brothers Arnold & Frank Harris and her cousin Robert Newman Sheets.
In addition to her parents Jane was preceded in death by her husband Elvin in 1992.
A graveside service will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the
Pullman
