Obituary

Janet Elizabeth Brandt, 85, longtime Pullman resident, passed away on March 26, 2016 at the Pullman Regional Hospital. The Burial Office and Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21 at St. James Episcopal Church in Pullman with Fr. Armand Larive presiding. A reception will follow in the church parish hall.

Janet was born on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1930, to Hazel and Harleth Steinke in Spokane Washington. They moved to Seattle where she attended and graduated from Queen Ann High School. She attended Whitman College in Walla Walla and Western Washington State College in Bellingham where she graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Education. While in college she was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. She was quite an accomplished singer at both schools and sang in the choirs and opera as well as took voice lessons.

Upon graduation she moved to Seattle and took a job as a Third Grade Teacher at Issaquah Elementary School in Issaquah. While teaching and living in Seattle she met William Brandt. They married on August 28th 1953. On March 15, 1955 their first son, David, was born. William Brandt was hired by WSU in 1956 and the family moved to Pullman Washington. Janet gave birth to their second son, Douglas on August 25th, 1960.

While living in Pullman and raising two boys Janet was active as a member of the "Friends of Music", Mu Phi Epsilon, was Vice President of the Pullman Community Theatre from 1975 to 77' as well as acted in many of their productions. She was also Treasurer of the "Woman's Faculty Club" at WSU and was a member and soloist with the Pullman Moscow Chorale, the Washington State University Opera Theatre, the WSU summer session operas, WSU opera theatre, the Underground Opera Company. She was also regular soloist for the Inland Empire Summer Music Festival at the University of Idaho as well as a member of the Ballet Folk of Moscow. She was also an active member with "The St. James Players" and sang regularly in the St. James Episcopal Church Choir. Janet was Rush Chairman and a National Delegate for the Alpha Phi Sorority, WSU Chapter. She was also one of the hosts for the NPR/ PBS KWSU radio show "Daybreak". She also worked for WSU in the departments of Agriculture, Anthropology, and the Dean's Office for the College of Arts until her retirement.

She is survived by her two sons, David (Mindy) and Douglas Brandt (Patty), her three grand daughters, Kelly (Derrick Nelson and great grandson Jaidyn), Katy (Stephen Grimes), and Nevada Brandt.
