Our beloved father and friend, John B. Murray, passed away November 16, 2014 following a brief illness. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday November 21, 2014 at the Pullman Presbyterian Church. A light reception will follow the service.
Dad was born January 6, 1923 in Spokane to Garnet H. and Florence (Binns) Murray. He was raised on the South Hill in Spokane, attended Lewis and Clark High School, graduating in 1940. Dad attended college at Washington State graduating with a BS in Electrical Engineering. His college years were interrupted when he served in the United States Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in the Philippines as part of the Signal Corps. He returned to WSC following his military service and graduated in June 1947.
He met Elizabeth "Betty" Mott in Spokane in 1946 and they were married in March of 1948. Together they raised 3 children, Carol, Joan and David. Dad will be remembered for the examples he set for hard work, service to his community and devotion to his family. Mom passed away in 2007 and he missed her companionship every day since then.
His entire career was spent working for Washington Water Power. From 1947 to 1959 he worked for the WWP in Spokane, Clarkston, Moscow and Davenport, finally moving his young family to Pullman in August 1960. He worked as the Palouse Division manager until his retirement in 1985. Community service was important to Dad. He served 8 years on the Pullman City Council from 1968 to 1975. He belonged to Kiwanis for over 50 years attending meetings up until last month. He also parked cars at Cougar football games until 2012 when poor health prevented him from continuing. Dad volunteered many hours at the Pullman Presbyterian Church installing the underground irrigation system and helping with landscape maintenance.
Dad loved golf, fishing, traveling and fixing things around the house. He was a member of the Clarkston Country Club, the Pullman Men's Golf Club, Pullman Kiwanis Club, the Pullman Presbyterian Church and the WWP retirees association. He was loved and will be missed by his children Carol Murray of Edmonds, WA., Joan Schille and husband Gerard of Walla Walla, WA. and son David of Pullman. He is also survived by his nieces Nadine Morton of Moscow, ID and Linda Campbell of Clarkston, WA, 2 grandchildren and their families and three special friends Dad called his "ladies", Dixie Kinzer, Mary Connelly and Carmen Haddock. Thanks to all Dad's friends and to the people at Bishop Place for their care and concern over the last 5 years.
Memorial contributions in Dad's honor are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Kimball Funeral Home & Crematory of Pullman has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
