Joseph Milan Toombs, Jr., 77, of Spokane, passed away July 14, 2024 at Avalon Care Center in Spokane. A graveside service will be Saturday, July 20th, at 11:00 AM in the Colfax Cemetery. Joe was born May 28, 1947 in Colfax, Washington to Joseph, Sr. and Lois Anderson Toombs. He grew up in a family of 4 brothers and 1 sister. Joe graduated from Colfax High School in 1965. During his teen years he often worked for area farmers doing haying work or other odd jobs. Following graduated he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam war. He worked in supply and transportation logistics. Joe was awarded the Purple Heart for bravely shown when he dove on top of other service members protecting them from rounds and shrapnel that injured his back in the process. Upon being honorably discharged he moved to Whittier, California and worked in a paint manufacturing business for a military buddy. Joe later worked as a 911 dispatcher for many years for the California Highway Patrol. After medical disabilities forced retirement he moved to Spokane, Washington to be closer to family and has resided in Spokane for the last 30 years. He is survived by his 3 brothers; Richard, Wallace and Donald Toombs all living in the Spokane area. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister; Natella.
