Joyce Marie Appel, 85, of Dusty passed away on June 13, 2014 at Whitman Hospital & Medical Center in Colfax after a brief illness. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday June 18, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Colfax.

Joyce was born on October 17, 1928 at Rolling Green, Minnesota, the youngest of Claude & Vera (Brown) Perry. When Joyce was seven years old the family moved to Helmer, Idaho and she grew up around there, attending grade school in Helmer and high school in Deary. She met Eugene "Bud" Appel and the couple married on February 6, 1947 in Lewiston, Idaho. The couple moved to rural Whitman county after their marriage and settled in the Dusty area in the mid 1960's and have made their home there since.

Joyce was a homemaker in every regard including gardening, crafts, cooking and baking. She loved to work in her flowerbeds, completed many knitting and crochet projects and enjoyed mushroom hunting in the Blue Mountains. She and Bud also spent many hours out in the woods collecting firewood, a hobby they both enjoyed. Her family remembers her as an excellent cook and her dinner rolls were well known amongst the family. She attended the Country Bible Church and also was a member of the Dusty B.B. Club.

Joyce is survived by her children Connie (Rick) Keene of Walla Walla; John (Patty) Appel of Pomeroy; Sally (Keith) Morris of Endicott and Joanne Gerkins of Kelso; twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; her friend since childhood Edna Knifong of Milton-Freewater as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, her husband Bud in 2004 and one grandson.

Memorial contributions in Joyce's honor are suggested to the Whitman Hospital Foundation or to a charity of choice.
