Obituary

Joyce Davis, long time Colfax resident, passed away Thursday evening, November 30, 2017 at the Whitman Hospital. She was 77. A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Colfax Golf Course on Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Joyce was the youngest of three girls born to Loren and Dorothy Shoemaker on May 12, 1940 in Seattle, Washington. When she was a young girl she lived with her great-aunt and uncle, Daisy and Roy Irvine, who raised her and to whom she was forever grateful. They moved to Ritzville for a few years when Joyce was in grade school. Eventually they settled in Clarkston, Washington where she attended high school and was part of the flag drill team. She graduated from Clarkston in 1958. Joyce had met Jerald "Jerry" Davis while both were sophomores and they began dating. They married December 4, 1959 in Lewiston and were very close to celebrating their 58th wedding anniversary when Joyce passed away. Joyce worked at Adams Drug Store behind the soda fountain counter early in their marriage. Their family started in 1960 with the arrival of son Tim, followed in 1962 by son Randy, and their third son, Jamey in 1965. Raising her boys brought much joy and happiness to Joyce. She was a constant supporter at every single one of their sporting events and many times a very "vocal" supporter as well. The family moved to Colfax in 1968 and Joyce settled into the community. She worked at both drug stores in town, at Glaser's Jewelry Store, S & R Grain and at the Whitman County Gazette for a time but her real passion and the job she loved was for Roy McDonald at the St. Ignatius Manor. Joyce cared for the handicapped as if they were her own and she raised her boys to do the same; often taking them to work with her and watching as they played games of checkers, visited, and interacted with the residents at the Manor. She loved to cook for her family and often cooked for the Thursday night men's golf league as well. Kentucky fried chicken was Joyce's favorite meal and you didn't dare travel to Moscow and not bring any back home to Joyce. She was baptized into the Episcopal Church in Clarkston, was a member of the Colfax ladies golf and of the Elks Lodge. As mentioned, she loved following her kids and grandkids in sports but Joyce was also a huge fan of the Seattle Mariners. More specifically of Ichiro; she collected posters, bobble heads, and wore his jersey proudly. She also enjoyed the hoops of the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Joyce will be missed by many in the community but especially by her husband, Jerry, at their Colfax home; by her three sons, Tim and Judi of Moscow, Randy of Colfax, and Jamey and Lisa of Sammamish, WA.; by 9 grandchildren, Jessi, Joel, Tony, Cathi, Melissa, McKenna, Cole, Carson and Madelyn; by 7 ½ great-grandchildren; and by her two sisters, Joanne (Don) Cosgrove of Madras, Oregon and Jean (Paul) Savage of Northern California. She was preceded in death by her parents and by those that raised her as parents, Daisy and Roy Irvine. The family suggests memorial gifts in her memory be made to the Colfax Golf Course Foundation or to the Colfax Volunteer Fire Department.
