Obituary

Judith LaFollette Sorem, 96, passed away July 6, 2025 at Robville Adult Family Home in
Pullman, WA. Judy was born December 13, 1928 in Madison, Wisconsin to Phillip Fox LaFollette
and Isabelle Bacon LaFollette, where she grew up and graduated from high school. After two
years at Reed College, a year at the University of Wisconsin, and a secretarial course in New
York City Judy moved to Minneapolis, where she worked for several years for Sears and met her
first husband, geologist Ronald Sorem. They married in 1953 and lived in the Philippines; their
daughter Kaia was born in Manila. The Sorems moved back to the U.S. two years later; their
sons Keith and Sam were born in Madison. They moved to Pullman in 1959, where their son
Tom was born.  Judy was a consummate homemaker who was devoted to raising her four children, and
taught beginner's piano for ten years. In 1975, she began working outside the home at local
businesses such as the Pullman Herald, Bank of Pullman, Neill Public Library, Seattle-First Bank,
and Washington State University. She returned to school at WSU, where she earned her BA in
1979 and her MA in English in 1983. She taught for a year at the College of Eastern Utah, then
returned to Pullman where she taught in the WSU English Department for ten years. She retired
in 1994. Judy and Ronald Sorem divorced in 2000; they were married for forty-seven years.
Judy married retired professor of chemistry Maurice Windsor in 2003. They lived happily
together until Maurice's death in 2024; they were married for nineteen years.
Judy was an avid quilter and enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, baking, attending local
plays and concerts, and travelling with her husband Maurice. Judy and Maurice were often seen
taking their daily walks around their neighborhood and by their favorite pond on Sunnyside Hill.
Her many quilts are cherished by her loved ones. She was a member of the Community
Congregational United Church of Christ, the Fortnightly Book Club, and her local lady's quilting
group in Pullman. Judy was very proud of her family's political heritage; her father served two
terms as Governor of Wisconsin and her grandfather was Senator Robert "Fighting Bob"
LaFollette.
Judy was preceded in death by her husband Maurice; parents Phillip and Isabelle;
siblings Robert LaFollette III and Sherry LaFollette Zabriskie. She is survived by daughter Kaia Sorem; son Keith Sorem, wife Pam, granddaughters Danielle and Kristen, and great granddaughter Charli; son Sam Sorem, wife Sonja, grandson Gunnar and wife Andrea, granddaughter Jessie and grandson Parker; and son Tom Sorem.  No public services are planned. Corbeill Funeral Home of Pullman, WA has been entrusted with arrangements.  The obituary was written by Jessie Sorem.
