Obituary

Kathleen Schmidt, passed away August 26, 2026 just days before her 101st birthday, at the Latour Peak Glenhaven Adult Family Home in Pullman, WA. She was born to Lawrence & Kathryn (Grieser) Hattrup in the home they built on Railroad Ave., in Uniontown, WA. She attended St. Boniface School and Holy Names College where she studied music.

On May 13, 1946, she married Leo Schmidt. They farmed in Uniontown, Plaza, and Palouse, WA. In 1970, they owned and operated Leo’s Department Store for six years and then they both worked at Washington State University until they retired. Kathleen worked at several libraries on campus.

During retirement, Leo and Kathleen lived in Clarkston and Spokane. After a fall, Kathleen was cared for by Peak Adult Family Home in Pullman, where she passed away. Kathleen will be remembered for her devotion to church and family, her spectacular flower gardens, her expert needle arts, her beautiful soprano voice, and her fried chicken.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Touchmark Senior Living in Spokane, Peak Adult Family Home, and Gentiva Hospice in Pullman. Memorials may be offered to St. Boniface Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 126, Uniontown, WA, for the preservation of the church building.

She is survived by her daughter Carol Ellsworth; daughter Sherry Schmidt and husband Larry Lapidus; daughter Kathryn Peterson and husband Michael; daughter Colleen Boone and husband Timothy; son Greg Schmidt and wife Glenda; daughter Holly Neilbergs and husband Joseph Shannon and grandchildren: Wendy Nelson (Tony Griffith), Shannon Nelson, Cory (Amy), Ruby (Chii Hui), Rosie, and Greyson Peterson, Moses (Elizabeth) Boone, Monica Shoemaker, Emily Boone, Tyson (Sunny) Schmidt, Casey (Carolee) Schmidt, Hannah (Drew) Hartz, Ian Neilbergs, and step-grandchildren David Ellsworth, Ariel and Genevieve Lapidus; 15 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; and sister-in-law Agnes Ludwig and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded by her parents, her husband Leo, granddaughter Robin Nelson, son-in-laws Rick Anderson and Glen Ellsworth, step-grandchildren Ken Ellsworth, Cindi Berg, brothers Don (Bette) Hattrup, Robert (Helen) Hattrup, and sister Ann (John) McLaughlin.

A viewing will be held on Friday, Sept. 4th from 10 AM to 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pullman, WA. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 followed by a reception in the church’s Parish Hall. Kathleen will be laid to rest at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Uniontown, WA following the reception.
