Dwayne Shahan, lifelong Steptoe resident, passed away Monday, July 24, 2017 at the Whitman Health & Rehabilitation Center in Colfax. He was 90. Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 31st at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Building on the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds. A lunch reception will follow and the burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at the Bethel Cemetery in Steptoe. Dwayne was born January 27, 1927 in Colfax to Leslie Ray "Pete" and Nora Mae McNabb Shahan. He grew up near the base of Steptoe Butte on a ranch. He attended school in Steptoe and excelled in athletics. Dwayne loved to play softball and was entered in the softball hall of fame. He graduated from Steptoe High School in 1944. Dwayne married his high school sweetheart, Melba Hall, on May 27, 1945. They farmed, ranched, and raised their family of 4 girls together in Steptoe. Dwayne was never shy of hard work and kept very busy with cows, horses, hay and kids. He and Melba spent many years bowling together on leagues and they often enjoyed a good card game. Dwayne was an especially good pinochle player. He was active with the Palouse Empire Fair and served as a judge for the horse show and for cow cutting. He served on the fair board and was a member of the rodeo association. Dwayne and Melba were extremely honored to be placed into the Palouse Empire Fair Hall of Fame. Dwayne loved to raise quarter horses and he spent countless hours teaching his girls to ride and show their horses. He was also an active member of the Sheriff's Posse. Dwayne raised Hereford cattle on the ranch too. Melba passed away September 20, 2004 and on March 18, 2006 Dwayne married Arlene Long Burke, also of Steptoe, and they continued to live life to its fullest on the ranch. They too enjoyed playing many card games, trips to the casino, or visits with family and friends. The S—S ranch was a place of activity well into Dwayne's golden years. He never really retired and kept horses and hay late into life. He also never lost his great sense of humor. Dwayne will be missed by his wife Arlene at home in Steptoe; his four daughters, Sharon and Hank Hankins of Mesquite, Nevada, Darcia and Fred Waples, Spokane, Leslie and Marv Lamb, Endicott, and Pam and Doug Ledbetter of Pasco; by Arlene's two sons, Scott and Jeannine Burke of Steptoe and Damon and Traci Burke of Steptoe; by 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to Melba he was preceded in death by his parents. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Bethel Cemetery at Steptoe or to the Palouse Empire Fair Foundation.
