Larry Weston Harris, 81 of Colfax, Washington passed away surrounded by family at Sunshine Terrace Assisted Living in Spokane on February 20, 2016. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 26 at the First Baptist Church in Colfax with Rev. Dean Ellis officiating. A reception will follow.
Larry was born in Ravenwood, Missouri the fifth of six children to Ben and Rachel Harris on October 6, 1934. When he was very young the family moved to Washington State finally settling in Steptoe. Larry grew up there attending school where he excelled in sports, including boxing. Upon graduating from Steptoe High School in 1953 Larry enlisted in the United States Navy. He received orders to be a radioman on the U.S.S Mt. McKinley. He was able to see a lot of the world and particularly enjoyed the Mediterranean. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to Steptoe and took a job at the Grange Supply in Colfax.
On June 4, 1961 he married Dorothy Brannan and they made their home in Colfax. Later, Larry started working for Darigold and made deliveries at many local businesses in Pullman and the surrounding areas. When Darigold moved operations out of Pullman, Larry chose not to relocate and returned to working for the Grange Supply where he worked in several positions until his retirement in 1997. After his retirement, he decided to get out of the house and went to work as the part-time janitor at the First Baptist Church. He really enjoyed interacting with all of the people who attended and used the church, and took pride in keeping the church looking good and ready for any event that may be happening. After several years he retired again!
More than anything Larry enjoyed family. Whether it was a family vacation when the kids were young or spoiling the three grandchildren he loved so much, Larry lived for family. He loved puttering around in the yard planting flowers and growing his prize tomatoes. He really enjoyed his time with the guys having coffee at the Top Notch every morning. Larry was a member of the First Baptist Church in Colfax and was steadfast in his faith, knowing that he would be with his Lord in Heaven. We rejoice in this assurance.
Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years Dorothy who is residing in Spokane; sons Bob (Wendy) of Spokane and Doug of Monroe; grandchildren Erin, Cody and Isabella and his sister Clora Codd of Burien. He was preceded in death by sisters Vura Hudkins, Marilyn Quarders, Naomi Harris, and Beverly Russell. Memorial contributions in Larry's honor are suggested to the Union Gospel Mission or to the First Baptist Church.
Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
