Obituary

LEONARD A. DAVIES, 93, of Pullman, passed away on Jan. 9, 2015 surrounded by his family at Bishop Place Assisted Living in Pullman, WA. Leonard was born Nov. 11, 1921 in Joseph, OR to Walter & Elnora (Emmons) Davies. He grew up in Oregon, graduating from Salem High School in 1939. Following graduation Leonard attended the Merit Davis School of Accounting for one year and began his career at US National Bank in Salem, OR from 1940-1942. Leonard enlisted in the US Navy June 4, 1942 as a medic and rapidly promoted through the ranks attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer Pharmacists Mate during WWII, stationed at the U.S. Fleet Hospital No. 105 in Nouméa, New Caledonia of the South Pacific. Leonard returned from the war and married his one true love, Doris Nevdahl in Spokane, WA on July 8, 1945 and was honorably discharged from the Navy on October 11, 1945. Leonard never returned to active duty but remained part of the US Navy Reserves until June 24, 1952. The couple made Salem their first home where Leonard continued to work for US National Bank from 1945-1952. Leonard relocated the family to Yakima, WA in 1952 when he became the Business Manager for Wagner Chevrolet. He served in that position until 1966 when Leonard accepted a position at Washington State University and the family moved to Pullman. He retired as Chief Accounting Supervisor at WSU Housing and Dining in 1987. Leonard was a devoted family man who loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was always so proud of his family and rarely did a conversation occur without him mentioning one of them and then proceeding to tell a story and finish with a joke. Leonard was a mentor to a countless number of individuals and always provided selfless acts of kindness to all. People were honored to call him their friend and we are blessed to have such a great example of how you should live your life. During their retirement years, Leonard and Doris loved to travel the Oregon coast in their fifth wheel, often accompanied by their close friends. They also enjoyed trips to Alaska and Hawaii. Leonard was honored to take the trip of his lifetime in June 2012 as part of the Inland NW Honor Flight; accompanied by his son Les they traveled back to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices. Leonard was an avid golfer, a connoisseur of fine wines, cigars and bourbon and a food enthusiast.
