Leonard Boyd Smith, of Pullman WA, passed away on October 5th 2026, due to Alzheimer’s.
Leonard was born on October 4th 1948 in Lubbock TX to Frank A Smith & Drucille Smith. His father was a US Navy officer so the family moved frequently & Leonard continued moving as an adult. He lived in Lubbock TX, Brownfield TX, Key West FL, Norfolk VA, LaMarque TX, Melbourne FL, Merritt Island FL, Tallahassee FL, Pocatello ID, Boise ID, La Grande OR, Moscow ID & Pullman WA.
At age 18, Leonard joined the US Marines. After basic training at Parris Island SC & advanced training at Fort Lejeune NC, he was assigned to the First Marine Division, Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 2nd Platoon in the Vietnam War for 13 months. Leonard was awarded the Purple Heart, the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal & Vietnam Campaign Medal. Leonard served for 2 years & received promotions to Lance Corporal & Corporal before receiving an Honorable Discharge. He remained a proud former Marine the rest of his life & also served with the National Guard.
While attending Florida State University, Leonard fell in love with Idaho on a summer trip from Florida to the Pacific Ocean. He transferred to Idaho State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business. Leonard continued his education, attending classes at Boise State University & the University of Idaho.
Leonard accepted Jesus as his Lord & Savior as a teenager & served him the rest of his life.
For the last 2-1/2 years of his life, Leonard needed 24 hour care. He received the best of tender, loving care at Care Tribe Adult Family Home, Pullman WA. He was treated by the owners, Paul & Mercy Nyamai, & their staff like a member of their family. Many thanks also to Gentiva Hospice for providing Leonard the care he needed to stay home & comfortable. All of Gentiva’s staff members were kind & compassionate as well as knowledgeable.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Dru Smith & his cousin, Keith Lincoln. Surviving Leonard are his sister, Linda Ann Smith, of FL, Aunt Patricia & Uncle William Lincoln of MA, Aunt Nancy Smith of FL, Cousins Rellie Lawyer of AZ, Elizabeth Burke of CA, Hope Hersh of MA, Clay Smith of CT, Martha Lincoln of IL, Mark Smith of FL, Heather Cook of MA & his chosen family Jeff & Carol Breed, of Moscow ID & Paul & Mercy Nyamai of Pullman WA.
