Lori Batina, 55, of Pullman passed away on February 14 after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Ray, and daughter, Julia.
Lori was born in St. Paul to Winy and Thomas Arland of Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in microbiology and later earned a Master's degree in microbiology. She also received a pharmacy degree from WSU in 1995 and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, also from WSU. She practiced pharmacy at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for many years and later at several pharmacies in Pullman. Her patients were her primary concern and easing their suffering her only goal.
Lori enjoyed studying Tibetan Buddhism since the early 1990s and traveled on a life changing pilgrimage to India in 2005. She was also interested in the teachings of Wicca and the practice of Reiki. Buddhism was her main spiritual guide in life. She regularly travelled to Vancouver BC, Nelson, and Toronto to listen to teachings and develop her meditation skills, and saw the Dalai Lama give a teaching in southern Idaho in 2005. She was cherished by members of her sangha for her loving kindness.
Lori also loved the outdoors and cared passionately about the environment. She actively protested dams on the Snake river, the mega loads, the coal train, and strongly supported the protests of the Native American community to stop the Dakota access pipeline. She also helped organize the March for Survival between Pullman and Moscow in 2015.
Lori is also survived by her parents Thomas and Winy Arland, of Sandia Park, New Mexico, her sister Cassandra Arland Carnahan, of Walnut Creek, California, and her brother Timothy, of San Diego. Her gentle spirit and compassionate nature will be greatly missed.
