MARGARET DOROTHY (STEWART) HOLLOWAY
March 17, 1923-March 3, 2017
Margaret Dorothy (Stewart) Holloway, 93, of Pullman, passed away March 3, 2017 at her Pullman home.
Margaret Dorothy Stewart, of hearty English-Scottish stock, entered this life on March 17, 1923, in Marton, New Zealand. At three years of age, Margaret and her family moved to Wellington, New Zealand. Their house was up the hill from beautiful Worser Bay, where Margaret and her siblings, Doug, Alan, and Mary, spent hours in the summer, playing on the beach. At age five, she started Worser Bay School, carrying an empty lunch box, with which to bash the other kids! (if needed) She did well in her studies and developed a love for tennis and basketball there. Margaret attended Wellington Tech, studying to be a secretary, where she honed her basketball skills and played tennis at Miramar Tennis Club. She also played in a Wellington basketball league, for the YWCA team. Several years out of tech, she found her dream job at Universal Pictures.
In 1943, during WW I I, Margaret met Stan, a handsome American Marine. She followed her heart after the war, sailing to New York City on the dilapidated ship "Rangitiki" and traveling by train to Oregon, marrying Stan on October 12, 1946. They started life together in Farmington, WA. Margaret, a big city girl, adjusted to farming and small town living. She learned to cook, can, bake bread, and drive, double clutching trucks during wheat harvest. Active in the community, she was a Pythian Sister, a Fortnightly Club member, league bowler, and Methodist Church goer. She doled out love and discipline to her children in goodly amounts and instilled in them a love of books.
Margaret and Stan moved to Pullman, WA in 1970 and Margaret, with her secretarial skills, became head secretary of animal sciences at WSU. She took up tennis again, playing into her mid-eighties. She was an active member of the Pullman Senior Center and belonged to two book clubs. An avid knitter, she knitted and donated hundreds of caps for newborn babies. Margaret's knit dish cloths were always a hit at the Pullman Senior Center bazaar. Margaret and Stan were able to make trips to New Zealand throughout their years together. After Stan's passing away, Margaret continued to enjoy traveling. She made one last trip to New Zealand, after 2007, and enjoyed road trips with the Pullman Senior Center and her kids. Margaret is survived by her daughters Anne (Daniel/Corkey) and Dorothy (Joe); sons Clyde (Beth) and David (Cynthia); nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Margaret's house on Saturday, March 18, starting at 1 PM. Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman, WA has been entrusted with arrangements.
O, if I only could make you see
The clear blue eyes, the tender smile.
The sovereign sweetness, the gentle grace,
The woman's soul, and the angel face
That are beaming on me all
this while;
I need not speak these foolish
words, yet one word tells you
all I would say----She is my Mother.
