Obituary

Margaret Hopkins Logen, 97, of St. John, passed quietly into her Lord's presence December 8, 2015, after a short bout with pneumonia.

She was born February 17, 1918 to Daniel and Annabel (Ferris) Hopkins at Lacrosse, WA. The young family soon moved to St. John. Margaret attended Cottonwood grade school (a horse was her transportation) and St. John High School, where she graduated valedictorian of her class in 1935.

About this time she became the sole secretary for the fledgling Inland Power and Light, typing all the correspondence, bylaws, etc, for her father, a leading founder and first president. She gave countless hours of volunteer time before the co-op could hire a secretary.

Margaret graduated from Washington State College (now WSU), taught commercial studies at Omak High School, and then married Thomas Logen, whom she had met at WSC. They made their home at Stanwood, WA where they operated the family dairy. Tom died in an accident in early 1951, leaving Margaret with two little boys and a baby girl on the way to support. When caring for her family permitted, Margaret began her long career as a paralegal with a law office in Stanwood, where she worked until age 95.

Margaret served her Lord faithfully in her church in secretarial positions, as a greeter, Sunday school teacher, choir member, organist, and in the bell choir she rang the largest bells. Margaret loved to travel--anywhere--whether abroad or in the US, most often with other family members. Because of health issues, she lived at the wonderful St. John Adult Care Home this last year. She was able to attend church regularly with family until her last week.

Margaret is survived by a sister Helen (Don) Cowan of St. John; her children Dan (Patricia) of Stanwood, Lynn (Judy) of Bellevue, and Barbara of Goleta, CA; five grandchildren, Bonnie Logen of Stanwood, Graham (Megan) Logen of Stanwood, Karen (Geoff) Lyons of Bellevue, Karsten (Jackie) Logen of Kent, and Erik (Vicki) Logen of St. John; and five great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband Tom and her brother Howard Hopkins.

There will be a celebration of her life at Stanwood United Methodist Church on January 16th. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax attended to the local arrangements.
