Obituary

MARY MARGUERITE HOOPER

Our dear Aunt Reet passed away May 5, 2015 at Pullman Regional Hospital at the age of 98. She was born in Johnson, WA on March 5, 1917, the third of nine children of Fred and Clara (Reed) Hooper. After completing her schooling in Johnson, Marguerite studied to achieve a BS degree in Home Economics from then Washington State College in Pullman.
Following teaching assignments in Oakesdale and Castle Rock, Marg settled into teaching middle school grades 7-9 in Prosser, WA. She eagerly devoted her thirty-three year long career to teaching classes in home living, cooking, sewing, and Washington State history before retiring in 1971.
Moving back to her childhood home in Johnson, Marguerite's retirement gave her time to enjoy backyard birds and gardening. She specialized in raising heirloom beans and tall bearded iris. Later, Marg moved to Pullman, living first at The Statesman Condos then moving to Whitman Senior Living. Wherever she lived, Marg made time to watch sporting events and cheer on her teams of the Gonzaga Bulldogs, the Seattle Seahawks, and the WSU Cougars.
As a purposeful lifetime learner, Marguerite especially savored reading mysteries and any nonfiction topic. She eagerly tracked current events and conversations with her were lively and humorous. She served as the family historian, the keeper of the cherished family Bible, an animated teller of old stories, a singer of songs, and the guardian of all memories that gave our family stability and roots. She is already greatly missed.
Marguerite is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Laura Ann Meiners; six Hooper brothers, Bill, Frank, Albert (Pete), John, Vern, and Paul; and one nephew. Survivors include one sister Isabel Nodland of Spokane; one sister-in-law Elaine Hooper of Seattle; twenty-three nieces and nephews, and the extended families of her twenty-four nieces and nephews.
A family reunion will celebrate Marguerite's life on the Fourth of July this year at the home of Marguerite's niece and her husband, Darla and David Port. Private burial will be held at the Pullman Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home is caring for the family.
