Obituary

Marian E. "Marianne" Peterson, 89, of Pullman, died on May 30, 2015 at Pullman Regional Hospital after a short illness. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2015 at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pullman. A light reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Marianne was born on July 16, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Jesse and Irene (Allen) Schouweiler and grew up during the Great Depression. An older brother, Donald, died of pneumonia as a young child, but Marriane, her sister Alice, and brother Jim grew to adulthood despite the challenges of real poverty and Minnesota winters.

On September 13, 1947, Marianne married her college sweetheart, Walfred H. Peterson, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The couple made their home in St. Paul for many years while Walfred taught at Bethel College. After a brief sojourn in Washington, D.C., the Petersons moved to Pullman in 1968 when Walfred accepted a faculty position in the Political Science Department at Washington State University. Years later, Marianne earned her bachelor's degree from WSU.

Family was the focus of Marianne's life. She worked at a number of part-time or short-term jobs over the years, but mostly she labored at the many tasks of being a wife and mother. She was serious about sewing and enjoyed weaving, having a large loom set up in the family room of the house for many years. Marianne also enjoyed singing, both around the house and in church choirs. She was a volunteer tutor of both children and international students at WSU. Marianne avidly followed national politics and subscribed to views found in the left-wing of the Democratic Party, positions she believed flowed naturally from studying the Gospels.

Marianne is survived by her son, Nils Peterson and wife Krista Kramer of Moscow; her daughter Elsa Kirsten Peters of Pullman; and her grandchild Karina Kramer of Moscow. She was preceded in death by her husband in August 2013.

Memorial contributions in Marianne's honor are suggested to the Choir Fund of the Community Congregational Church in Pullman. Kimball Funeral Home & Crematory of Pullman has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
