IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marietta
Olson
April 23, 1946 – April 21, 2025
Marietta (Marti) Smith (Bishop, Olson) passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital April 21st 2025 with her husband David and her Goddaughter Michel holding her hands. She was born in Fayetteville Arkansas April 23, 1946 and the family shortly moved to Pateros, Washington in the Methow Valley. She was the fourth child of James H. Smith and Mildred Logue Smith. The trombone was her instrument in the school band, and she worked on the staff of the Squi Alton yearbook, graduating with honors from Pateros High School in 1964. Marti attended Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing. She received her degree as a registered nurse in the Spring of 1967. Marti continued her education and rose to the level of nurse manager. She was an exemplary nursing supervisor and was respected by staff and physicians alike. She married David Bishop in the Fall of 1967 and they lived in Spokane until his passing in Dec. of 2003. Marti met David Olson late 2006. They married January 12th 2008 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho at the Hitching Post. Marti then retired from a career as a nurse and nurse manager at Sacred Heart in Spokane. She moved to Pullman where David worked at WSU. Marti took up the craft of jewelry making becoming quite proficient. She sold her jewelry at shows, gave some to friends, and repaired jewelry for what was donated to Thrifty Grandmothers in Colfax. Marti and David enjoyed a 3-week trip to Australia as well as other trips in the U.S. including feeding the burros cookies through the car window at Custer State Park. In 2018, Marti and David bought a home in Colfax and moved there in 2020. Marti enjoyed working with Sarah Golden and Shannon Gfeller for Super Colfax. She used to tell me how much she admired those two young professional women and what they were doing for the community. She also enjoyed the library. The staff there were wonderful to Marti. In 2024, Marti took her Goddaughter Michel and Michel's two daughters Olivia and Lucy for a trip to Hawaii. Marti enjoyed that trip so much.
The funeral service for Marti will be at Steptoe Church Friday May 2, 2025 at 1 pm. Afterwards Marti will be laid to rest at the cemetery on the hill. Marti and David bought plots here in 2010 as it is so peaceful there.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Pateros Washington High School Scholarship Fund. Back in 1964 it was some funds from this as well as Marti's working in the apple orchards and for Amy Neff and from her family she was able to attend Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing thus beginning her career as a nurse and nurse manager. David would like to thank the men and women at Whitman Hospital ER, the flight crew from Life Flight, and the men and women at Sacred Heart in ICU2 and 4 north for their professionalism and their kindness. Marti was in good hands with all of these folks and I will always be grateful for that.
Dress will be casual (David will be dressed that way and won't be telling others if you dress casually). Even though Marti always dressed well I'm fairly certain she would not send you to What Not to Wear if you showed up casually.
Marti is survived by her husband, David 2, brothers J.D. Smith, Grand Junction Colorado; Duane (Ruth) Smith, Kansas City MO; Sister Yolanda (Steve) Gibboney, Kansas City Missouri: 5 nieces, 5 nephews, 5 great-nieces, and 5 great nephews.
She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Laura Jameson Wenatchee Washington, and Betty Luke of Lubbock Texas. Marti is also survived by Michel Patschkowski, her husband Brad and their two daughters Miss Olivia and Miss Lucy. Marti was so thankful for having Michel early, and her family later in her life.
