In 1928, the family purchased and moved to a farm in the Clear Creek area between Palouse and Colfax. Marjorie and several of her siblings attended Clear Creek country school until it was consolidated with Colfax Public Schools in the 1930s. While a Colfax High School student, Marjorie was a secretary at Whitman County's old courthouse. She graduated with CHS Class of 1943.As a child, Marjorie decided to become a Registered Nurse and provide comfort and care for others. During World War II, she was a nurse cadet, graduating with the Sacred Heart School of Nursing Class of 1946 in Spokane. Marjorie married Theodore (Ted) Elder on May 7, 1947, at Colfax. They made their home in Garfield for many years. Marjorie pursued her nursing career for more than 60 years working at area nursing homes and hospitals, and doing private duty. She also enjoyed traveling to nursing conventions with her eldest daughter, Joan, who a third generation Registered Nurse is following in the footsteps of her mother, and her grandmother Mae Hensle. The first two generations were affiliated with St. Ignatius Hospital in Colfax. Marjorie's hobbies included tending her flower and vegetable gardens and orchard, and trying new recipes that combined her homegrown crops. She also attempted to raise such diverse crops as cotton on the family property, "Elder Plantation," in Garfield. She enjoyed canning and freezing a variety of foods from her garden, and tackling several home improvement projects during the family's nearly 55 years on the property. She also instilled in her children a love of reading, music and jigsaw puzzles. Ted died in 1991. She was also predeceased by her great-grandson, Jade Slavick; and her brothers, James, Vincent and Richard Hensle. Survivors include her children, Joan (Peg) Elder-Taylor, Colfax; Scott (Becky) Elder, Clear Lake, CA; Susan (Steve) Botts, Snohomish; Sarah (Sally) Elder, Garfield; Dana (Shelley) Elder, Colfax, and Ben (Heidi) Elder, Colbert; nine grandchildren, Jeremy and Jared Kelly, Tyler and Travis Botts, and Aaron, Adam, Layna, Landon and Lauryn Elder; and five great-grandchildren, Samantha Kelly, Keira and Ava Botts, and Langston and Hannah Elder.
