Marjorie was born on January 21, 1923 in Dubuque, Iowa to Arthur and Gertrude (Pettit) Huber. She attended the school system in Dubuque and participated in her high school's band and orchestra. She attended Iowa State University in Iowa City, Iowa for two years and then transferred to San Jose State University in San Jose, California where she graduated in 1958 with her B.A. in Dietetics with a minor in science.
She married John K. Elliott on April 17, 1944 in Holden, Massachusetts. That marriage ended in divorce in 1953. She later married Robert E. Howland on January 17, 1958 in San Jose, California. She and Robert moved to Lancaster, Washington on their wedding anniversary in 1994 to be near their youngest daughter, Lori and her family in Spokane.
In St. John, Marjorie enjoyed singing in the church choir and served for five years as a volunteer board member for the Council on Aging. She enjoyed gardening, reading, swimming and visiting with friends. Marjorie was also an organist and pianist for churches in the places she lived. She became very fond of living in Washington, calling it "a wonderful place to retire because everyone is so friendly and helpful when there is a need. It is not hard to love the people here."
Marjorie is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert Howland at the family home in Lancaster; four children David John (Jane) Elliott of Carlisle, Massachusetts; Eric Arthur (Patricia) Elliott of St. John; Alison Ruth (Larry) Elliott-Humbert of Redding, California and Lori Lynn (Wesley) Howland-Hein of Spokane. She was preceded in death by her daughter Joan Elliott-Galbas in 1997 and her former husband Rev. John K. Elliott, father of her four oldest children, in 2010.
In parting, remember these words from one of Marjorie's favorite scripture passages, Isaiah 26:3, "Thou shalt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee because he trusteth in Thee". Marjorie would also enjoy it if you read and took to heart Micah 6:8 and Isaiah 53:5.
