Obituary

Martha Jean Scourey, St. Maries, Idaho resident and formerly of Pullman, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the Guardian Angel Homes in Lewiston from complications of dementia. She was 77. A Memorial Service will be Monday, March 28th at 11:00 am at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. Martha was born March 9, 1939 in Colfax to William J. and M. Pauline (Abercrombie) Hammar. The family lived in Pullman on Water Street in a house that William built where Martha and her twin sister Mary grew up. Martha graduated from Pullman High School in 1957. She played badminton on the high school team and was a member of the senior class officers and of Treble Triad and also had learned to play the piano along the way. She attended WSC in Pullman for one year. Martha married her high school sweetheart, Allen Hood; one of their first dates was to see Elvis Presley in Spokane. They made their home on the farm south of Pullman. For many years she kept very busy helping around the farm. She loved the animals, especially horses Clipper and Tievoli and occasionally milked a cow. She also tended to a large vegetable garden and her flower beds were full of beautiful plants as well. She was an NBA basketball fan and excellent snow and water skier. Martha was a busy mother that proudly followed her children in their activities. She was active in the PTA and rarely, if ever, missed a track meet. She was an excellent cook and kept the farm crew well fed. She was a member of the Clinton Needle and Thread club, a group of local ladies, and she was a member of the Lady Lions club. She was a talented artist as well. She could sew, crochet and do cross-stitch work like no other. She made beautiful pieces of stained glass too. Martha and Allen later divorced after twenty five years together and she moved to Moscow, Idaho. She then married James Scourey in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on Christmas Eve 1986. They made their home in Avery, Idaho for a couple of years where Martha also worked as a teacher's aide. They moved to St. Maries, Idaho in 1988. They had several different animals over the years and she loved them all, especially the horses. They owned Tenth Street Lumber together where she loved helping in the store in the "Merc on Main" gift department and tending to the plants in the nursery. She truly had a green thumb and raised lots of house plants. She loved talking with her customers. She also sold Fuller Brush for a short time. She was a volunteer with the local art gallery and spent countless hours with various causes related to art around St. Maries. Her stained glass adorns the Presbyterian Church there and she was known to exchange a piece or two with the local dentist as well for dental work. She was a collector of many things but she really enjoyed her McCoy pottery collection, Lusterware, Budweiser steins and Legos. Martha is survived by her husband Jim at home in St. Maries; her twin sister, Mary (Don) Zehner of Clarkston; 4 children; Rick Hood of Pullman, Karol (Todd) Startzel of Spokane, Jeanne (Guy) Therrien of Pullman and Robyn Hood (Casey Jones) of Boise; 3 step-children, Jayme (Lenore) Marshall of Kirkland, WA., Jess (Rene') Scourey and Joel (Joy) Scourey both of Pullman; 19 grandchildren, Camryn, Olivia, Brittany, Briley, Josh (Jillian), A.J., Tanner, Anson, Caiden, Victor, Olivia, Rachel, Travis, Michael, Jake, Ashley (Waylon), Alec, Bailey, and Nick; as well as one great-granddaughter, Sage. Martha was preceded in death by her parents and by an infant son Lee Joseph Hood. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
