Mary Scheideman, long time Colfax resident, passed away peacefully at Whitman Hospital in Colfax on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. She was 94. The Rosary service will be Sunday, November 11 ^th at 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colfax. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, November 12 ^th , at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the Dusty Cemetery. Mary Catherine Scheideman was born February 20, 1924 at the family farm in South Dakota in the community of Polo between the little towns of Orient and Miller. She was the 7 ^th child of nine and the only girl born to Frank and Catherine Brueggeman. Mary had eight brothers; Leonard, Lawrence, Norbert, Frank, Joseph, Arnold, Edward and W. Peter. Peter, the youngest, is now the last surviving sibling. The family moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in 1934 when Mary was 10 years old. She graduated from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy in 1941. Mary worked for the Department of Agriculture in Coeur d'Alene before transferring to the Washington State office (of the same Department of Agriculture then known as AAA, now as the FSA) in Pullman, Washington. She met Dan Scheideman in Pullman, Washington in December, 1945 after attending a basketball game at the Washington State College gym. They married in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho at the St. Thomas Catholic Church on September 21, 1947. They made their home in the Dusty community west of Colfax where they farmed for over thirty years. They built a home in Colfax and moved there in 1977. Mary also worked as a bookkeeper for the Whitman County Gazette from 1970 until 1987 and for University Printing. She was always active with her children and was a 4-H leader for many years. She participated in the Palouse Empire Fair, loved her flowers and gardening. She was a member of the Dusty B.B. Club, PEO, and St. Patrick Catholic Church. An avid seamstress, she sewed lots of clothes. She was an excellent cook and made meals for the hired men, she also baked and did lots of canning. She liked to play cards and was a member of the pinochle club. She was a lifelong fan of baseball and loved the game so much that she often went to the ball field in Colfax just to watch. She rooted for the Yankee's lately. Mary was an ardent supporter of the hospital and always enjoyed attending the Whitman Hospital Foundation Gala each year. As a friend to the staff at Bruning Funeral Home, Mary often covered the funeral home office while the directors were out on services. Mary will be missed by many in the community but most especially by her children; John Michael (Anne) Scheideman of Madras, Oregon and Barbara Ann (Len) Jeppeson of Hermiston, Oregon; her 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren as well as numerous honorary grandchildren, and by her brother, Pete Brueggeman of Seattle. Her husband, Dan, passed away in 2005. The family suggests memorial gifts in her memory be to the Whitman Hospital Foundation or to the Whitman Hospital Auxiliary.
