IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maurice W.
Windsor
February 28, 1928 – June 3, 2024
Dr. Maurice W. Windsor, 96, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2024, in Pullman, WA. He was born in a leap year on February 28, 1928, in Gillingham, Kent, England to Bertie and Annie Windsor.
Dr. Windsor was a Professor of Chemistry at Washington State University for 20 years and was known for his work with lasers and research in photosynthesis. He loved swimming and skiing, was passionate about native culture and art, and enjoyed traveling the globe.
He married Charmian Mary Symons in 1953 and together they immigrated to the United States sailing across the Atlantic on the Queen Mary and landing in New York City in 1955. After Charmian's passing in 2000, he married Judy LaFollette Sorem of Pullman, WA in 2003 and they shared 20 years together.
Maurice lived an exceptional life growing up in war-torn England during which he was shipped off, as many boys were, to a coal-mining family in Wales. Dad recalled seeing and hearing V-1 buzz bombs flying overhead on their way to London. Later he joined the Royal Armed Forces and trained in "Chipmunks" in support of the war effort. After the war, he received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Queens College at Cambridge University and assisted Lord George Porter at the Royal Institute with his Nobel Prize winning work. After moving to Southern California to work at TRW, he worked alongside and invested with Jerry Buss, later the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Forum. Other notable friends and colleagues included Roy Nutt, inventor of the Fortran computer language, Linus Pauling, a Nobel Peace Prize and Nobel Prize in Chemistry recipient, Richard Feynmann, notable physicist, and Sir Michael Palin, famous actor from Monty Python.
He is survived by his wife Judy, his son David Windsor of Hood River, Oregon, his daughter Vanessa Martinez of Sammamish, WA, and his son Jonathan Windsor of Ferndale, WA. He is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
No public services will be planned and his cremated remains will be blessed at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pullman, WA. Corbeill Funeral Home, Pullman, Washington has been entrusted with arrangements.
